Mass Casualty Incident Management Priorities

From first-arriving unit to transport, learn the key functions that keep an MCI organized.

First Arriving Unit

The first crew should perform a scene size-up, declare an MCI, and establish command. Request additional resources and set up staging areas. Resist the urge to begin treating the first patient you see.

Key Functions

Assign roles for triage, treatment, transport, and staging. Treatment areas are organized by priority color, with a treatment officer supervising. The transport officer coordinates ambulance loading and hospital destinations.

Hospital Coordination

Distribute patients among hospitals to avoid overwhelming any single facility. Keep communication open with receiving facilities about numbers and severity. Maintain a log of patients, destinations, and transporting units.
