Hazmat Awareness Level for EMS Providers

Learn to recognize hazardous materials, use placards and the ERG, and stay safe in the cold zone.

Zones and Safety

Hazmat scenes use hot, warm, and cold zones to control contamination. EMS typically works in the cold zone after patients have been decontaminated. Park uphill, upwind, and upstream from the incident.

Identifying the Material

Use binoculars to read placards, shipping papers, and container labels from a distance. The Emergency Response Guidebook lists the four-digit UN number and recommended isolation distances. Safety Data Sheets provide detailed hazard information.

Awareness Level Actions

Awareness-level responders recognize the hazard, isolate the area, deny entry, and call for trained hazmat teams. Do not attempt rescue without proper training and protective gear. Provide care only after patients are decontaminated.
