Start With Experience
Working as an EMT builds patient contact skills, scene confidence, and an understanding of how EMS systems function. Many paramedic programs prefer or require some field experience. It also helps you decide if paramedic work suits you.
Paramedic Education
Paramedic programs include classroom work, labs, clinical rotations, and a field internship, lasting about 1 to 2 years. Choose a CAAHEP-accredited program, since this is required to sit for the NREMT paramedic exam. Many programs offer certificate and associate degree options.
Beyond Paramedic
Experienced paramedics move into critical care, flight, tactical medicine, education, or management. Others continue to nursing, physician assistant, or physician pathways. Keep your options open and seek mentors in the roles that interest you.
