Crime Scene Awareness and Evidence Preservation

Provide patient care while preserving evidence and staying safe on scenes with law enforcement.

March 30, 2025

Scene Safety First

Do not enter a violent scene until law enforcement declares it secure. Be alert to weapons, hostile bystanders, and escape routes. If the scene becomes unsafe, retreat.

Preserving Evidence

Patient care takes priority, but try to minimize disturbance. Avoid cutting through bullet holes or knife tears in clothing when possible. Keep clothing and personal items, and note the position in which you found the patient.

Documentation

Record what you saw and did objectively, including observations of the scene on arrival. Avoid speculation about who is at fault. Hand off evidence and information to law enforcement according to policy.
