Allergic Reactions: Mild Versus Severe

Separate localized reactions from life-threatening systemic reactions and escalate care appropriately.

February 25, 2025

Mild Reactions

Localized itching, hives, and mild swelling without respiratory or circulatory compromise are mild. Remove the trigger, monitor, and consider antihistamines according to protocol. Reassess often because progression can be rapid.

Severe Reactions

Signs of anaphylaxis include difficulty breathing, wheezing, stridor, hypotension, and swelling of the face or tongue. Gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting and cramping may accompany them. Give intramuscular epinephrine without delay.

Common Triggers

Foods, insect stings, medications, and latex are frequent culprits. Ask about prior reactions and whether the patient carries an auto-injector. Document exposure and treatment details.
