Industrial FE Exam Tips

5 expert strategies to help you pass the FE Industrial and Systems Exam

1

Master Probability and Statistics Applications

The FE Industrial exam is heavy on statistics. Practice hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, and regression analysis until the procedures are automatic. Know when to use t-tests vs. z-tests, chi-square tests, and ANOVA. Focus on interpreting results, not just calculating them.

2

Know Operations Research and Optimization Methods

Linear programming, the simplex method, and network optimization appear frequently. Practice setting up objective functions and constraints from word problems. Know how to solve transportation and assignment problems, and understand duality in linear programming.

3

Review Quality Control Charts and Process Capability

Understand X-bar, R-charts, p-charts, and c-charts and know when each applies. Practice calculating process capability indices (Cp, Cpk) and interpreting control chart patterns. Know the Western Electric rules for identifying out-of-control processes.

4

Focus on Engineering Economics Calculations

Time value of money problems, present worth analysis, and rate of return calculations are tested across all FE disciplines but are especially important for industrial. Practice using the interest factor tables in the reference handbook. Know how to compare alternatives using annual worth, present worth, and benefit-cost ratio methods.

5

Study Ergonomics and Human Factors Principles

Know anthropometric data applications, workspace design guidelines, and NIOSH lifting equation calculations. Practice determining recommended weight limits and lifting indices. Understand the principles of cognitive ergonomics including information processing, decision making, and display design.
