About Pearson VUE Testing Centers

The FE exam is administered exclusively at Pearson VUE testing centers, which are professional testing facilities located across the United States and in many countries worldwide. Understanding the Pearson VUE experience beforehand eliminates surprises on exam day and lets you focus entirely on the exam content.

Scheduling Your Exam

After your NCEES application is approved, you can schedule your exam through the Pearson VUE website or by phone. The FE exam is offered year-round, and you can select a date and time that works for your schedule. Popular testing times fill up quickly, so schedule at least 2 to 4 weeks in advance, especially if you need a specific date.

You can reschedule or cancel your appointment without penalty up to a certain number of days before the exam (check current NCEES and Pearson VUE policies for the specific deadline). After the deadline, you may forfeit your exam fee.

Finding a Testing Center

Pearson VUE has testing centers in most major cities and many smaller towns. Use the Pearson VUE website to search for centers near your location. Consider these factors when choosing a center:

  • Distance and travel time: Choose a center close enough that travel stress is minimal on exam morning
  • Parking: Verify that adequate parking is available
  • Availability: Some centers have limited FE exam seats, so your preferred date may not be available at every location
  • Reviews: If possible, read online reviews of the testing center to learn about the environment and staff

Arriving at the Center

Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. Late arrivals may be turned away and forfeit their exam fee. Plan your route in advance, accounting for traffic, construction, and weather conditions. Consider doing a practice drive to the center a few days before the exam.

Check-In Process

The check-in process is thorough and designed to maintain exam security:

  1. ID Verification: Present your valid, government-issued photo ID. The name on your ID must match your NCEES account name exactly. Discrepancies may prevent you from testing.
  2. Biometric Capture: Most centers take a digital photo and may also capture a palm vein pattern or digital signature for identity verification.
  3. Personal Items: You must store all personal items (phone, wallet, keys, watch, snacks, water) in a provided locker. You cannot access these items until your scheduled break or after the exam.
  4. Pockets and Clothing Check: The proctor will ask you to turn out your pockets and may visually inspect your clothing to ensure you are not bringing unauthorized materials into the testing room.
  5. Notepad: You receive an erasable notepad and marker for scratch work. If you fill it up during the exam, you can request a replacement from the proctor.

The Testing Room

The testing room is a quiet, climate-controlled space with individual computer workstations separated by dividers. Other test-takers may be taking different exams (not just the FE) at adjacent stations. Noise-reducing headphones are available at your station if you want additional sound isolation.

Security cameras monitor the room continuously. Proctors may walk through the room periodically. If you need assistance (technical issue, notepad replacement, restroom break), raise your hand and a proctor will come to your station.

The Computer Workstation

Your workstation includes:

  • Computer monitor: Displays the exam questions, the searchable FE Reference Handbook, and the on-screen calculator. You can resize and reposition these windows on your screen.
  • Keyboard and mouse: Standard input devices for navigating the exam and using the calculator.
  • Headphones: Noise-reducing headphones available on the desk.

The exam software includes a timer showing your remaining time, a question navigator showing which questions you have answered, flagged, or skipped, and the ability to review and change answers before submitting.

The Break

The FE exam includes an optional 25-minute break between the two exam sections. When you start the break, the exam timer pauses. You must check out with the proctor, access your locker for snacks and water, use the restroom, and check back in before the break timer expires. The check-in and check-out process takes several minutes, so your actual break time is closer to 20 minutes.

If you do not take the break, you can proceed directly to the second section.

After the Exam

When you finish or time expires, a preliminary screen may indicate that your exam has been completed. You will not receive immediate results. Return your erasable notepad and marker to the proctor, collect your personal items from the locker, and sign out.

Results are typically available within 7 to 10 business days through your NCEES account. You will receive an email notification when results are posted.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Name mismatch: If your ID name does not match your NCEES account, contact NCEES before your exam date to update your account. Do not assume the testing center can resolve this on exam day.
  • Technical problems: If the computer malfunctions during the exam, raise your hand immediately. The proctor will assist you, and any lost time should be restored.
  • Noise or distractions: If another test-taker is being disruptive, use the headphones or raise your hand to report the issue to a proctor.
