What to Expect on FE Exam Day
Walking into the testing center for your FE exam can feel intimidating, but knowing exactly what to expect takes a lot of the anxiety away. This guide covers every detail of the test day experience so you can focus entirely on the exam itself.
Before You Arrive
Your exam appointment confirmation from NCEES will include the testing center address, your scheduled time, and a list of acceptable identification documents. You will need a valid, government-issued photo ID that matches the name on your NCEES account. Bring your ID and your appointment confirmation. Leave everything else in your car or at home if possible.
Check-In Process
Plan to arrive at the testing center at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. The check-in process includes:
- Presenting your photo ID to the testing center staff
- Having your photo taken (this will appear on your score report)
- Providing a digital signature
- Storing all personal belongings in a provided locker (phones, watches, wallets, food)
- Receiving a brief orientation on the testing workstation
What You Can and Cannot Bring
The testing center provides everything you need: a computer workstation, the digital NCEES Reference Handbook, and a writing surface with a marker or pencil. You cannot bring your own calculator; an on-screen calculator is provided as part of the exam software. You also cannot bring any personal items into the testing room, including watches, phones, food, or drinks. The center provides earplugs or noise-canceling headphones if you want them.
The Testing Environment
You will be seated at an individual workstation in a room with other test takers who may be taking different exams. The room is monitored by cameras and proctors. The environment is typically quiet, though you may hear keyboard clicks and mouse movements from other examinees. If noise bothers you, use the provided earplugs or headphones.
Navigating the Exam Software
The FE exam is delivered through Pearson VUE software. Key features include:
- Question navigation: You can move forward and backward through questions within each section.
- Flagging: You can flag questions to return to later within the same section.
- Reference handbook: The searchable NCEES Reference Handbook is accessible at all times through a split-screen or separate window.
- Calculator: An on-screen scientific calculator is available throughout the exam.
- Timer: A countdown clock shows your remaining time for each section.
The Scheduled Break
After completing the first section of the exam, you will have a 25-minute scheduled break. During this break, you can leave the testing room, access your locker, eat a snack, and use the restroom. You must check out and check back in with the proctor. Use this break wisely: stretch, eat something light, and give your mind a brief rest before tackling the second half.
Time Management Strategies
With 110 questions and 5 hours and 20 minutes of testing time, you have approximately 2.9 minutes per question. Here is a strategy that works well:
- First pass: Go through all questions, answering the ones you know quickly and flagging the ones that require more time.
- Second pass: Return to flagged questions and work through them carefully.
- Final review: If time permits, review your answers, particularly any you were unsure about.
After the Exam
When you finish, you will complete a brief survey and then check out with the proctor. You will not receive your results immediately. NCEES typically releases results 7 to 10 days after the exam. You will receive an email notification when your results are available in your NCEES account.
Knowing what to expect on test day lets you walk in with confidence. Prepare your logistics the night before, get a good rest, and trust the studying you have done.
