Time Management Strategies for the FE Exam

The FE exam gives you 5 hours and 20 minutes to answer 110 questions. That works out to approximately 2.9 minutes per question. While that might sound reasonable, some questions will take 30 seconds and others could take 5 minutes or more. Without a solid time management strategy, you risk running out of time with unanswered questions on the table.

The Three-Pass Strategy

The most effective approach to the FE exam is the three-pass method:

Pass 1: The Quick Sweep (60 to 90 minutes per section)

Go through every question in order. Answer the ones you can solve quickly (under 2 minutes) and flag the rest. Do not spend more than 2 minutes on any question during this pass. The goal is to capture all the "easy points" first. Many test takers find that 40 to 50 percent of questions fall into this category.

Pass 2: The Working Pass (60 to 90 minutes per section)

Return to your flagged questions and work through them systematically. These are questions you understand but need more time to solve. Allocate 3 to 5 minutes per question during this pass. If a question still stumps you after 5 minutes, make your best educated guess and move on.

Pass 3: The Review (remaining time)

Use any remaining time to review your answers. Focus on questions where you were unsure, check for any unanswered questions, and verify that you did not make obvious errors on problems you solved quickly.

Setting Checkpoints

Divide each section into quarters and set time checkpoints. For example, if a section has 55 questions and 2 hours and 40 minutes:

  • After question 14: approximately 40 minutes should have elapsed
  • After question 28: approximately 80 minutes should have elapsed
  • After question 42: approximately 120 minutes should have elapsed
  • Remaining time for review and flagged questions

If you are significantly behind a checkpoint, speed up by flagging more questions for later rather than spending extra time on difficult ones.

Recognizing Question Types by Time Investment

With practice, you can quickly estimate how long a question will take:

  • 30-second questions: Conceptual questions, definition-based questions, ethics questions that you know the answer to immediately
  • 1 to 2 minute questions: Single-step calculations, straightforward formula applications
  • 3 to 4 minute questions: Multi-step calculations, problems requiring multiple formula lookups
  • 5+ minute questions: Complex word problems with multiple unknowns, problems requiring setting up systems of equations

When to Guess and Move On

There is no penalty for wrong answers on the FE exam. Every unanswered question is a guaranteed zero, while a guess gives you a 25 percent chance of getting the point. If you are stuck on a question, use these strategies before guessing:

  • Eliminate obviously wrong answer choices
  • Check if the units of the answer choices give you a clue
  • Consider the order of magnitude (is the answer likely in the thousands or the hundreds?)
  • Use engineering judgment to identify the most reasonable answer

Managing Mental Fatigue

A 5-hour exam is mentally exhausting. Your brain will start to slow down around the 2 to 3 hour mark. Use the scheduled break effectively: eat a light snack, drink water, stretch, and take deep breaths. Avoid reviewing study notes during the break, as this can increase anxiety without meaningfully improving your performance.

Practice Under Timed Conditions

The best way to build time management skills is to take full-length practice exams under realistic timed conditions. Do not pause the timer for bathroom breaks or to check your phone. Simulate the actual exam experience as closely as possible. After each practice exam, analyze where you spent too much time and adjust your strategy accordingly.

Time management is a skill that improves with practice. The more timed practice exams you take, the better your internal clock becomes, and the more confident you will feel on exam day.
