Official NCEES Resources
NCEES (National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying) produces several official resources for FE exam candidates. These materials are the most authentic preparation tools available because they are created by the same organization that develops the actual exam. Understanding what is available and how to use each resource effectively is an important part of your preparation strategy.
FE Reference Handbook
What It Is
The FE Reference Handbook is the single most important study resource. It is the only reference material available during the actual exam, provided as a searchable PDF on your exam computer. The handbook contains formulas, tables, charts, and reference data for all content areas tested on the FE exam.
How to Get It
The handbook is available as a free PDF download from the NCEES website. No purchase is necessary. Download it at the beginning of your study period and use it during every study session.
How to Use It
Use the handbook as your primary formula reference during practice. Do not solve practice problems using formulas from textbooks or your own notes. Build familiarity with the handbook layout so you can find formulas quickly on exam day. Note which formulas are in the handbook and which are not, so you know what you need to memorize versus what you can look up.
NCEES FE Practice Exams
What They Are
NCEES offers practice exams for each FE discipline. These are the most authentic practice exams available because they are developed by the same exam committees that create the actual exam questions. The practice exams use the same software interface as the real exam, including the searchable reference handbook and on-screen calculator.
What They Include
Each practice exam typically includes a full set of practice questions covering all content areas for the relevant discipline, along with detailed solutions for every question. The software replicates the actual exam experience, including the screen layout, question navigation, and timer.
How to Use Them
Take the NCEES practice exam under timed, exam-like conditions. This serves three purposes: it familiarizes you with the exam software, it provides an accurate assessment of your readiness, and it builds the stamina needed for a 5+ hour exam. After completing the practice exam, review every question thoroughly, including questions you answered correctly (to reinforce your approach) and especially questions you missed (to address knowledge gaps).
Ideally, take the practice exam about 2 to 3 weeks before your actual exam date. This gives you enough time to address weak areas identified by the practice exam without being so far in advance that you forget what you learned from the review.
NCEES Exam Specifications
What They Are
The exam specification (also called the exam blueprint) is a document that lists every content area tested on a specific FE discipline exam, along with the percentage weight of each area. This document defines exactly what the exam covers.
How to Get Them
Exam specifications are available on the NCEES website at no cost. Download the specification for your chosen discipline before creating your study plan.
How to Use Them
Use the exam specification as the backbone of your study plan. Ensure your preparation covers every content area listed in the specification, with study time allocated roughly in proportion to each area's weight. The specification also lists sub-topics within each content area, providing a detailed checklist of what you need to know.
NCEES Website Resources
Beyond the handbook and practice exams, the NCEES website provides:
- Exam day information: What to bring, testing center procedures, and exam policies
- FAQs: Answers to common questions about registration, scoring, and logistics
- State board information: Links to every state licensing board for state-specific requirements
- Exam updates: Announcements about changes to exam content, format, or policies
What NCEES Does NOT Offer
NCEES does not offer review courses, textbooks, video lectures, or ongoing tutoring. These resources must come from third-party providers. NCEES also does not guarantee that its practice exam questions will appear on the actual exam. The practice exam is designed to be representative of the exam content and difficulty, not a preview of specific exam questions.
Maximizing Official Resources
A recommended approach to using NCEES resources:
- Download the exam specification and FE Reference Handbook at the start of your study period
- Use the exam specification to create your study plan
- Use the FE Reference Handbook during all practice sessions
- Take the NCEES practice exam 2 to 3 weeks before your exam date
- Review practice exam results and adjust your final study priorities accordingly
While NCEES official resources are the most authentic, they should be supplemented with additional practice problems and study materials from reputable third-party sources to ensure comprehensive preparation.
