Your Final Week of Preparation
The last week before the FE exam is not the time for dramatic changes to your study routine. By this point, your knowledge base is largely set. The goal of the final week is to sharpen what you already know, build confidence, and ensure you are physically and mentally ready for exam day.
What to Study in the Final Week
Days 7-5 Before the Exam: Targeted Review
Review your weakest areas one more time, focusing on the topics that carry the most weight on the exam. Do not try to learn new topics from scratch during this week. Instead, reinforce the material you have already studied by working through practice problems in areas where your accuracy has improved but is not yet consistent.
Review your error log from practice exams. Look for patterns in the types of mistakes you make (unit errors, wrong formula selection, misreading questions) and consciously practice avoiding those errors.
Days 4-3 Before the Exam: Reference Handbook Review
Spend time navigating the FE Reference Handbook. Page through each section relevant to your exam discipline and remind yourself where key formulas are located. Practice finding formulas using the search function. The goal is to minimize time spent searching during the actual exam.
If there are formulas you use frequently but always have to look up, create a short list of their locations (page numbers or section names) as a mental guide. While you cannot bring notes into the exam, having a mental map of the handbook saves valuable seconds per question.
Days 2-1 Before the Exam: Light Review Only
Two days before the exam, do a light review session of 1 to 2 hours. Flip through your flashcards, glance at your summary notes, and perhaps solve 10 to 15 easy practice problems to keep your mind sharp. Avoid tackling difficult or frustrating problems that could undermine your confidence.
The day before the exam, do minimal studying. A brief 30-minute review of key formulas or concepts is fine, but spending 8 hours cramming will hurt more than help. Your brain needs rest to consolidate what you have learned.
What to Skip
- New topics: Do not try to learn an entirely new content area in the final week. The material will not have time to consolidate in your memory, and the effort may displace knowledge you have already built.
- Extremely difficult practice problems: Attempting problems far above FE exam difficulty can shake your confidence without providing meaningful exam preparation benefit.
- Memorizing every formula: The FE Reference Handbook is available during the exam. Focus on knowing how to apply formulas, not memorizing every one.
- Full-length practice exams: If you have not taken a full practice exam by this point, taking one in the final 2 to 3 days is too late to be useful and may cause unnecessary stress. Full practice exams should be completed at least one week before the exam.
Physical Preparation
Sleep
Prioritize sleep every night during the final week, especially the last two nights. Aim for 7 to 8 hours per night. Sleep deprivation impairs problem-solving ability, memory recall, and attention, all of which are critical for exam performance. If you have trouble sleeping due to anxiety, practice relaxation techniques or light physical activity in the evening.
Nutrition
Eat balanced meals throughout the week. Avoid drastic changes to your diet. The morning of the exam, eat a breakfast that includes protein and complex carbohydrates (eggs, oatmeal, whole grain toast) for sustained energy. Avoid heavy, greasy foods that may cause sluggishness, and limit caffeine to your normal amount to avoid jitteriness.
Exercise
Continue your normal exercise routine through the week, but do not overdo it. Light to moderate exercise (walking, jogging, yoga) helps manage stress and promotes better sleep. Avoid intense workouts in the last two days that might leave you fatigued.
Logistics Preparation
- Confirm your Pearson VUE appointment time and location
- Drive the route to the testing center (or look it up) so you know exactly where to go and how long it takes
- Prepare your ID and confirmation details the night before
- Set two alarms for exam morning
- Pack snacks and water for the break (store in your car or the testing center locker)
- Choose comfortable clothes and layer up, since testing center temperatures vary
Mental Preparation
Visualize yourself calmly and confidently working through the exam. Remind yourself of the preparation you have completed. Trust that the knowledge is there and will be accessible when you need it. Focus on what you know, not what you do not know. Your job on exam day is to demonstrate the knowledge you have built, not to be perfect on every question.
