Your Final Week Before the FE Exam

The last week before the FE exam is not the time for learning new material. It is the time to consolidate what you know, sharpen your test-taking skills, and set yourself up for peak performance. Here is a day-by-day strategy for your final week.

The Golden Rule: No New Material

If you have not learned a topic by the final week, you are not going to master it now. Attempting to learn new concepts this late creates anxiety and displaces review time for topics you already know. Instead, focus on reinforcing your strengths and reviewing your most-practiced topics.

Day 7 (One Week Before): Full Practice Exam

Take a full-length, timed practice exam under realistic conditions:

  • Sit at a desk in a quiet room
  • Use only the NCEES Reference Handbook (no other notes)
  • Time yourself strictly
  • Take the scheduled break
  • Do not check answers until you finish the entire exam

After finishing, score your exam and identify patterns:

  • Which topics did you get wrong consistently?
  • Were your errors due to concept gaps or careless mistakes?
  • How was your pacing? Did you run out of time?
  • Which topics felt most comfortable?

Days 6 to 5: Targeted Review of Weak Areas

Based on your practice exam results, review your weakest areas among topics you have studied. Focus on:

  • Topics where you almost got the right answer (close but made an error)
  • High-weight topics on the exam specification where you are not confident
  • Formulas or procedures you keep forgetting

Do not try to master topics you never studied. Instead, learn to recognize them on the exam and make educated guesses.

Days 4 to 3: Handbook Navigation Practice

Spend time practicing how to find information in the NCEES Reference Handbook quickly:

  • Pick a random topic and time how long it takes to find the relevant formulas
  • Practice navigating the table of contents and searching the PDF
  • Note the page numbers of frequently used sections (unit conversions, steam tables, interest factor tables, Moody diagram)
  • Practice solving problems while looking up formulas from the handbook (not from memory)

The exam provides the handbook as a searchable PDF. Practice using the search function if your practice handbook is electronic.

Day 2: Light Review and Logistics

Keep your study light on the day before the exam. Review key formulas, flip through your notes, and do a few easy practice problems to stay sharp. Prepare everything you need for exam day:

  • Approved calculator: Verify your calculator is on the NCEES-approved list and that it has fresh batteries.
  • Identification: You will need a current, valid, government-issued photo ID with your name matching your NCEES registration.
  • Exam confirmation: Print or save your exam appointment confirmation.
  • Directions: Know how to get to the testing center and how long the drive takes. Plan to arrive 30 minutes early.
  • Comfort items: Snacks for the break, water, and a light jacket (testing centers are often cold).

Day 1 (Exam Day): Performance Mode

  • Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep the night before. Sleep is more important than any last-minute studying.
  • Eat a balanced breakfast. Include protein and complex carbohydrates for sustained energy. Avoid heavy or greasy foods.
  • Arrive early. Plan to be at the testing center 30 minutes before your appointment to handle check-in calmly.
  • Stay calm during the exam. If you encounter a difficult question, flag it and move on. You can return to it later.

Test-Taking Strategies for Exam Day

Pacing

The FE exam has 110 questions over approximately 5 hours and 20 minutes of test time. That is roughly 2.9 minutes per question. Some questions will take 30 seconds; others will take 5 minutes. The key is to not spend too much time on any single question.

  • If a question takes more than 4 minutes, flag it and move on
  • Answer every question (there is no penalty for guessing)
  • Return to flagged questions after completing the rest of the exam

Question Strategy

  • Read the question carefully. Make sure you understand what is being asked before solving.
  • Identify the topic. Knowing the topic tells you where to look in the handbook.
  • Look up formulas. Even if you think you remember a formula, verify it in the handbook. A small error in a formula leads to a wrong answer.
  • Check units. Many wrong answers come from unit conversion errors. Always check that your units are consistent.
  • Use the answer choices. If you can narrow down to two choices, you have a 50% chance even if you guess. Sometimes you can work backward from the answer choices.
  • Trust your preparation. If you have studied consistently, you are ready. Do not second-guess yourself.

Managing Test Anxiety

  • It is normal to feel nervous. A moderate level of anxiety actually improves performance.
  • Take deep breaths if you feel overwhelmed during the exam. A few slow, deep breaths can reset your focus.
  • Do not compare yourself to others. Focus on your own progress and preparation.
  • Remember the pass rate. The majority of first-time, well-prepared candidates pass the FE exam.
  • Perspective: The FE exam is repeatable. Even if the worst happens, you can take it again. This is not a one-chance-only situation.

What to Skip in the Final Week

  • Topics you never studied and do not understand at all
  • Detailed derivations of formulas (just know how to use them)
  • Obscure topics that make up less than 2 to 3% of the exam
  • Lengthy study sessions the night before (rest is more important)

What to Focus On in the Final Week

  • Your strongest topics (make sure you get these points)
  • High-weight topics on the exam specification
  • Handbook navigation speed
  • Calculator proficiency
  • Sleep, nutrition, and stress management

The final week is about peaking, not cramming. Trust your preparation, take care of yourself, and walk into the exam with confidence.
