Preparing for Exam Day
After weeks or months of studying, exam day can feel both exciting and nerve-wracking. Knowing exactly what to expect at the Pearson VUE testing center and how to handle the logistics will help you arrive calm, focused, and ready to perform your best.
What to Bring
The items you need for exam day are minimal but critical:
- Valid, government-issued photo ID: Your name on the ID must match the name on your NCEES account exactly. A driver's license or passport works. Bring a second form of ID as a backup.
- NCEES authorization email or confirmation number: While the testing center should have your appointment on file, having your confirmation number available prevents any check-in issues.
That is all you need. You cannot bring any personal items into the testing room, including:
- Calculators (a built-in calculator is provided on screen)
- Reference materials of any kind (the FE Reference Handbook is provided digitally)
- Cell phones, smart watches, or electronic devices
- Food or drinks (you can access these during scheduled breaks)
- Scratch paper (an erasable notepad is provided at the center)
Arriving at the Testing Center
Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. Late arrivals may be denied entry and forfeit their exam fee. The check-in process includes:
- Presenting your photo ID
- Having your photo taken
- Storing personal belongings in a locker
- Receiving an erasable notepad and marker for scratch work
- Being escorted to your testing station
The testing room is monitored by cameras and proctors. You will be seated at a computer workstation with noise-reducing headphones available if you prefer. The environment is quiet and climate-controlled.
During the Exam
Time Management
You have 5 hours and 20 minutes to complete 110 questions, which gives you approximately 2 minutes and 54 seconds per question on average. The exam is divided into two sections with an optional 25-minute break between them.
Use these time management strategies:
- Answer easy questions first, flagging difficult ones for later review
- Do not spend more than 4 minutes on any single question in your first pass
- Keep track of your pace: at the halfway point of each section, you should have at least half the questions answered
- Leave 15 to 20 minutes at the end for reviewing flagged questions
Using the On-Screen Tools
The exam software includes a searchable FE Reference Handbook, a built-in calculator, and a flagging system. Practice using the NCEES practice exam software before exam day so the interface feels familiar. Learn to use the handbook search function effectively, since searching by keyword is often faster than scrolling through pages.
The Scheduled Break
Take the break. Even if you feel fine, stepping away from the screen for a few minutes helps reset your focus for the second half. Use the restroom, have a snack and water from your locker, and take a few deep breaths before returning.
Dealing with Difficult Questions
You will encounter questions where you are unsure of the correct answer. Do not panic. Use the process of elimination to narrow down your choices. If you can eliminate two of four answer options, your odds of guessing correctly double. Never leave a question unanswered, as there is no penalty for guessing on the FE exam.
Some questions are unscored pilot items being tested for future exams. You will not know which questions are scored and which are pilot items, so treat every question with equal effort.
After the Exam
Results are typically available within 7 to 10 business days through your NCEES account. You will receive a pass or fail result, along with a diagnostic report showing your performance in each content area. If you pass, congratulations! You can apply for your EIT certification through your state board. If you do not pass, the diagnostic report will help you identify areas to focus on for your next attempt.
