10 Common FE Exam Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Many FE exam candidates make the same preventable mistakes. Learning from these common errors can save you from costly missteps and help you approach the exam with greater confidence. Here are the ten mistakes we see most often, along with practical strategies to avoid each one.

Mistake 1: Starting to Study Too Late

Many candidates underestimate how much preparation the FE exam requires. Starting just two or three weeks before the exam is rarely enough time to cover all topics adequately.

Solution: Begin studying at least 8 to 12 weeks before your exam date. Create a study schedule during the first week and stick to it. Consistent daily study is more effective than cramming.

Mistake 2: Not Using the Reference Handbook During Study

Some candidates study from textbooks and notes without ever opening the NCEES Reference Handbook until exam day. Then they waste valuable time trying to find formulas they have never located before.

Solution: Download the reference handbook on day one and use it as your primary formula reference throughout your study process. Build familiarity with its organization and search functionality.

Mistake 3: Focusing Only on Strengths

It feels good to study topics you are already comfortable with, but this approach leaves your weak areas unimproved. The exam covers a broad range of topics, and weak areas can cost you enough points to fail.

Solution: Identify your weakest topics early and allocate extra study time to them. A balanced approach that brings weak areas up to competence is more valuable than perfecting strong areas.

Mistake 4: Passive Studying Instead of Active Problem-Solving

Reading textbooks and watching videos creates an illusion of understanding. You might feel like you know the material until you try to solve a problem without help.

Solution: Spend at least 70 percent of your study time actively solving problems. Read concepts briefly, then immediately apply them to practice problems. The exam tests problem-solving ability, not knowledge recall.

Mistake 5: Ignoring Units and Conversions

Unit errors are one of the most common sources of wrong answers on the FE exam. Mixing up units (using feet when the formula requires meters, or forgetting to convert kPa to Pa) leads to answers that are off by orders of magnitude.

Solution: Always write out your units when solving problems. Use dimensional analysis to verify that your answer has the correct units. Keep common conversion factors handy in the reference handbook.

Mistake 6: Not Taking Full-Length Practice Exams

Short practice sessions do not prepare you for the mental endurance required for a 5-hour exam. Candidates who skip full-length practice exams often run out of energy or time during the real test.

Solution: Take at least two to three full-length practice exams under realistic conditions. Time yourself, use only the reference handbook, and simulate the testing environment as closely as possible.

Mistake 7: Spending Too Long on One Question

Getting stuck on a difficult question and spending 10 or 15 minutes trying to solve it wastes time that could be used to answer three or four easier questions. Every question is worth the same number of points.

Solution: Set a time limit of 4 to 5 minutes per question. If you cannot solve it within that time, make your best guess, flag it, and move on. Return to flagged questions only after completing all other questions.

Mistake 8: Leaving Questions Blank

There is no penalty for wrong answers on the FE exam. A blank answer guarantees zero points, while a guess gives you a 25 percent chance of earning a point.

Solution: Answer every single question. If you truly have no idea, eliminate any obviously wrong options and guess from the remaining choices. Even blind guessing is better than leaving blanks.

Mistake 9: Neglecting Ethics and Professional Practice

Some candidates consider ethics questions unimportant and skip studying them. However, ethics questions are among the easiest on the exam, and they appear on every discipline version.

Solution: Study the NCEES Model Rules of Professional Conduct. Ethics questions are straightforward once you understand the professional codes. These are free points you should not leave on the table.

Mistake 10: Poor Exam Day Preparation

Arriving late, bringing prohibited items, or not knowing the testing center procedures creates stress that impacts your performance on the exam itself.

Solution: Prepare all logistics the day before your exam. Know exactly where the testing center is and how long it takes to get there. Review the list of allowed and prohibited items. Get a full night of sleep and eat a good breakfast.

Bonus: Studying from the Wrong Materials

Using outdated study materials or resources not aligned with the current exam specifications can waste your time on irrelevant topics or miss important current content.

Solution: Verify that your study materials align with the current NCEES exam specification for your discipline. The exam specifications are updated periodically, so always use the latest version.

Avoiding these common mistakes puts you ahead of many other test takers. Combine smart preparation with consistent effort, and you will walk into the exam room confident and ready to pass.
