What to bring
Bring these
- ✓Two forms of valid, unexpired ID. Your primary ID must be government-issued with a photo and signature (driver's license or passport). Your secondary ID must have your name and signature.
- ✓Your exam confirmation email or number. Print it or have it accessible on your phone. You will need it during check-in.
- ✓A light jacket or sweater. Testing rooms are often cold. You cannot control the thermostat. Dress in layers.
- ✓A snack and water bottle. Leave these in your locker for your break. You cannot bring them into the testing room.
Do NOT bring these into the testing room
- ✗Cell phone or smartwatch. All electronics must be stored in a locker before entering the testing room.
- ✗Notes, books, or study materials. Nothing written or printed is allowed in the testing room.
- ✗Food or drinks. No food, beverages, or gum in the testing room. Eat before you enter and during breaks.
- ✗Bags, purses, or wallets. All personal belongings go in the locker. You enter with only your IDs and locker key.
Step-by-step: Prometric check-in process
Step 1: Arrive 30 minutes early
Plan to arrive at your Prometric testing center at least 30 minutes before your scheduled exam time. This gives you a buffer for traffic, parking, and the check-in process. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, you may be turned away and will forfeit your exam fee.
Step 2: Check in at the front desk
Present your two forms of ID and your confirmation number to the Prometric staff. They will verify your identity and have you sign a log. The name on your IDs must match the name on your SHRM exam registration exactly. If there is a mismatch, you may not be allowed to test.
Step 3: Store your belongings
You will be assigned a locker for your personal belongings. Store your phone, wallet, bag, snacks, and anything else you brought. You will receive a locker key to keep with you. Turn your pockets inside out to prove they are empty. Some centers also use a metal detector wand.
Step 4: Receive scratch materials
Prometric will give you a whiteboard or scratch paper and a marker or pen for notes during the exam. You can request additional materials during the exam if you run out. All scratch materials must be returned after the exam.
Step 5: Enter the testing room and begin
A proctor will escort you to your assigned computer station. You will see a brief tutorial on the testing software before the exam begins. The 4-hour clock starts when you finish the tutorial and begin the first question. The room is monitored by cameras and proctors at all times.
Exam format and structure
Understanding the exam format removes surprises and helps you manage your time. Here is exactly what you will see when you sit down at the computer:
- 160 total questions: 134 are scored and count toward your result. 26 are unscored pretest items that SHRM uses to evaluate future questions. You will not know which are which.
- Two question types: Knowledge items test factual HR knowledge (definitions, regulations, best practices). Situational judgment items present workplace scenarios and ask you to choose the best course of action.
- All multiple choice: Every question has four answer choices. There is no penalty for guessing. Always answer every question.
- 4 hours total: The clock runs continuously, including during any breaks you take. Pace yourself at approximately 1.5 minutes per question.
- Flag and review: You can flag questions to come back to later. Before submitting, you can review and change any answers.
The exam covers all six SHRM BASK domains: Leadership, Business, Interpersonal, People, Organization, and Workplace. Questions from all domains are mixed throughout the exam rather than grouped by topic.
Break strategy
You are allowed to take breaks, but the clock does not stop. Here is a practical approach:
- Take one planned break around question 80. This is roughly the halfway point. Use the restroom, eat your snack, drink water, and stretch. Keep it under 5 minutes.
- Do not take more than one break unless you genuinely need it. Each break costs you 3-5 minutes of exam time. Two breaks could cost you 6-10 questions worth of time.
- If you feel mental fatigue setting in, a short break can help. A 2-minute restroom break to reset is better than grinding through 30 questions while unfocused.
- Eat a protein-rich snack before the exam. This sustains your energy better than sugar. Bring a protein bar or nuts for your mid-exam break.
Last-minute tips for exam day
Stop studying 24-48 hours before the exam. Last-minute cramming increases anxiety without meaningfully improving your knowledge. Trust your preparation. Spend the day before relaxing, exercising, and getting a full night of sleep.
Read every question completely before looking at the answers. Many candidates lose points by reading too quickly and missing key details in the question stem. For situational judgment items, identify what is being asked before evaluating the choices.
Eliminate obviously wrong answers first. Even on hard questions, you can usually eliminate one or two answer choices immediately. This improves your odds from 25% to 33% or 50% on educated guesses.
Do not spend more than 2 minutes on any single question. If you are stuck, flag it and move on. Come back to flagged questions after finishing the rest of the exam. You may find that later questions trigger relevant knowledge.
Trust your first instinct on situational judgment items. Research consistently shows that your initial response to scenario-based questions is more likely to be correct than a revised answer. Only change an answer if you have a specific, concrete reason.
Watch your pacing. Check the clock after every 40 questions. At 1.5 minutes per question, you should finish question 40 by the 1-hour mark, question 80 by the 2-hour mark, and question 120 by the 3-hour mark. This leaves 60 minutes for the final 40 questions and review.
After the exam
When you click submit, you will see a preliminary pass/fail result on screen immediately. This is not your official score, but it is reliable. Here is what to expect:
- If you passed: Congratulations. Your official certification will be processed within 4-6 weeks. You will receive a digital badge and certificate from SHRM.
- If you did not pass: Your score report will show which content domains were your weakest. Use this to focus your restudy efforts. You can retake the exam in a future testing window.
- Return all scratch materials to the proctor before leaving the testing room.
- Collect your belongings from your locker.

Common Questions
How many questions are on the SHRM exam?
The SHRM exam contains 160 total questions: 134 scored questions and 26 unscored pretest items. You will not know which questions are pretest items. All questions are multiple choice, split between knowledge items and situational judgment items.
How long is the SHRM exam?
You have 4 hours (240 minutes) to complete the SHRM exam. This includes time for all 160 questions. That works out to about 1.5 minutes per question. Most candidates finish with 15 to 30 minutes to spare if they pace themselves well.
Can I take a break during the SHRM exam?
Yes. You are allowed to take unscheduled breaks during the exam, but the clock does not stop. Any time you spend on a break counts against your 4-hour total. Most candidates take one break around the halfway point to use the restroom and reset mentally.
What if I arrive late to the Prometric center?
Prometric has a strict late arrival policy. If you arrive more than 15 minutes after your scheduled appointment time, you may be turned away and forfeit your exam fee. Arrive at least 30 minutes early to allow time for check-in and security procedures.
Can I go back and change my answers on the SHRM exam?
Yes. The SHRM exam allows you to flag questions for review and return to them before submitting. You can change answers as many times as you want within the 4-hour window. However, research on test-taking suggests that your first instinct is usually correct, so only change answers if you have a clear reason.
When do I get my SHRM exam results?
Preliminary pass or fail results are displayed on screen immediately after you submit the exam. Official score reports are sent via email within a few weeks. If you pass, your SHRM certification is typically active within 4 to 6 weeks of your exam date.
What happens if I fail the SHRM exam?
If you fail, you can retake the exam during a future testing window. There is no limit on retakes, but you must reapply and pay the exam fee each time. Your score report will indicate which content domains were weakest, so you can focus your restudy efforts.
