SHRM-CP vs SHRM-SCP: Which Certification Should You Get?
A detailed comparison of both SHRM certifications to help you choose the right credential for your HR career stage and goals.
Understanding the two SHRM certifications
The Society for Human Resource Management offers two professional certifications: the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) and the SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP). Both validate your HR expertise against SHRM's Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge (BASK), but they target different career stages and test different depths of competency.
The SHRM-CP is designed for HR professionals who implement policies, serve as the point of contact for staff and stakeholders, and perform operational HR functions. If your day-to-day work involves executing HR programs, managing employee relations cases, administering benefits, or handling recruitment, the SHRM-CP aligns with your role.
The SHRM-SCP is built for senior practitioners who develop HR strategies, lead departments, oversee policy creation, and align HR initiatives with organizational goals. If you are making decisions that shape the direction of your company's people strategy rather than carrying out someone else's plan, the SHRM-SCP matches your professional scope.

Decision guide: 4 questions to help you choose
Answer these four questions honestly. They will point you toward the certification that matches your current career stage.
1. Do you develop HR strategy or execute it?
If you develop strategy →
The SHRM-SCP is designed for professionals who create and drive HR strategy at the organizational level.
If you execute strategy →
The SHRM-CP validates your ability to implement HR policies, programs, and daily operations effectively.
2. Do you have 3+ years of strategic HR experience?
If yes →
You likely meet the SHRM-SCP eligibility requirements. Strategic experience means you have influenced company-wide HR decisions.
If no →
Start with the SHRM-CP. Build your strategic portfolio and pursue the SCP when you have the required experience.
3. Are you targeting a senior HR leadership position?
If yes →
The SHRM-SCP carries more weight for Director, VP, and CHRO-level roles. Many senior job postings list it as preferred.
If no →
The SHRM-CP is the standard credential for HR Generalist, Specialist, Coordinator, and mid-level Manager roles.
4. Are you comfortable with a 50-55% pass rate?
If yes →
The SHRM-SCP is a demanding exam, but thorough preparation and real strategic experience dramatically improve your odds.
If no →
The SHRM-CP has a 65-70% pass rate. Earning it first builds confidence and validates your HR foundation before attempting the SCP.
Salary impact
Both SHRM certifications provide measurable salary increases. The difference reflects the seniority of roles each credential targets.
SHRM-CP Salary Premium
SHRM-CP holders earn an average of $10,000 to $15,000 more than non-certified peers in comparable HR roles. The credential signals validated competency to employers and opens doors to positions that list certification as a requirement.
SHRM-SCP Salary Premium
SHRM-SCP holders see an average salary increase of $15,000 to $25,000 over non-certified professionals at similar experience levels. Senior HR roles commanding the highest premiums include HR Directors, VPs of Human Resources, and Chief Human Resources Officers.
Exam content and difficulty comparison
Both exams draw from the same SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge (BASK), which covers three knowledge domains (People, Organization, Workplace) and four behavioral competencies (Leadership, Business, Interpersonal, and Ethics). The critical difference is how deeply each exam tests strategic application.
The SHRM-CP exam emphasizes operational knowledge and foundational competencies. Questions test whether you understand HR concepts and can apply them to standard workplace situations. Situational judgment items ask you to identify the best course of action in scenarios you would encounter as a mid-level HR professional.
The SHRM-SCP exam shifts heavily toward strategic scenarios. Situational judgment items carry more weight and present complex, ambiguous situations where multiple answers seem plausible. You are expected to think like a senior leader who considers organizational impact, legal risk, stakeholder alignment, and long-term consequences simultaneously.
Both exams include 134 questions in 3 hours and 40 minutes. Of those, approximately 110 are scored and 24 are pretest items that do not count toward your score. You will not know which questions are pretest items, so treat every question as if it counts.

Recertification requirements
Both SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certifications must be renewed every three years. You have two options.
Option 1: Earn 60 PDCs
Professional Development Credits (PDCs) can be earned through activities like attending conferences, completing courses, publishing research, volunteering for SHRM chapters, or participating in webinars. You need 60 PDCs within your 3-year cycle.
RecommendedOption 2: Retake the exam
If you have not earned enough PDCs by the end of your certification cycle, you can retake the full exam to renew. This costs the standard exam fee ($300 member / $475 non-member) and requires passing the same exam again.
Backup optionFrequently asked questions
Can I take the SHRM-SCP without first earning the SHRM-CP?
Yes. The SHRM-SCP is not a sequential step after the SHRM-CP. You can sit for the SHRM-SCP directly as long as you meet its eligibility requirements. Many senior HR professionals skip the SHRM-CP entirely and go straight to the SCP if they have the required experience.
Is the SHRM-SCP harder than the SHRM-CP?
Yes. The SHRM-SCP has a significantly lower pass rate (50-55% vs 65-70%) and places heavier emphasis on strategic, scenario-based questions. The SCP demands deeper experience with organizational strategy, policy creation, and senior-level decision making rather than operational HR knowledge.
Which certification do employers value more?
It depends on the role. For most HR positions, either certification demonstrates professional competence and commitment. However, senior leadership roles (HR Director, VP of HR, CHRO) increasingly prefer or require the SHRM-SCP. For early- to mid-career roles, the SHRM-CP is the standard credential employers look for.
What is the total cost of getting SHRM certified?
The exam fee is $300 for SHRM members or $475 for non-members (same for both CP and SCP). SHRM membership costs $244 per year, so joining before testing saves you $175 on the exam alone. Add $300-$600 for study materials and you are looking at roughly $550-$1,100 total depending on your approach.
Can I switch from SHRM-CP to SHRM-SCP?
Yes. Once you meet the SHRM-SCP eligibility requirements, you can apply to take the SCP exam. Your SHRM-CP remains valid until its recertification date. If you pass the SCP, it replaces your CP credential. There is no upgrade path or transfer; you take the full SCP exam.
How does SHRM certification compare to HRCI (PHR/SPHR)?
SHRM certifications (CP/SCP) emphasize behavioral competencies alongside HR knowledge, using scenario-based situational judgment items. HRCI certifications (PHR/SPHR) focus more heavily on technical HR knowledge and regulations. Both are widely recognized. SHRM certifications have grown in market share since their 2014 launch, while HRCI credentials remain the legacy standard.
What if I choose the wrong exam level?
If you sit for the SHRM-SCP and do not pass, you can retake it or apply for the SHRM-CP instead. If you pass the SHRM-CP and later realize you qualified for the SCP, you can take the SCP exam once you are ready. There is no penalty for starting with the CP and moving up later.
