Taking the SHRM Exam from Home

SHRM now offers remote proctoring as an alternative to in-person testing centers, allowing you to take the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP exam from the comfort of your own home or office. This option provides flexibility and convenience, but it also comes with specific requirements and considerations that you need to understand before test day.

Remote proctoring uses your personal computer's webcam and microphone to monitor you during the exam. A live proctor watches your testing session in real time, ensuring the same level of exam integrity as a traditional testing center. The exam content, format, timing, and scoring are identical regardless of whether you test remotely or in person.

Technical Requirements

Before choosing remote proctoring, make sure your equipment meets all technical specifications. Failing to meet these requirements could prevent you from starting your exam or cause disruptions during testing.

Computer Requirements

  • Operating System: Windows 10 or later, or macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or later. Linux and Chrome OS are generally not supported.
  • Browser: The latest version of Google Chrome or the testing provider's secure browser, depending on which proctoring service SHRM uses for your testing window.
  • Webcam: A working webcam with at least 640x480 resolution. Both built-in and external webcams are acceptable.
  • Microphone: A functioning microphone is required. The proctor needs to hear your testing environment.
  • Internet Connection: A stable, high-speed internet connection with a minimum of 1 Mbps upload and download speed. A wired Ethernet connection is strongly recommended over Wi-Fi to prevent dropouts.
  • Display: A single monitor only. Dual-monitor setups must have the second monitor disconnected or turned off.

Running the System Check

SHRM and its testing partner provide a system check tool that you should run at least 48 hours before your exam date. This check verifies your hardware, software, and internet connection. Do not wait until exam day to discover a compatibility issue. Run the system check early so you have time to resolve any problems.

Setting Up Your Testing Environment

Your testing space must meet strict requirements to maintain exam security. The proctor will inspect your environment before the exam begins, and violations can result in your exam being terminated.

  • Clean desk policy: Your desk or workspace must be completely clear of papers, books, notes, phones, tablets, and any unauthorized items. Only your computer, keyboard, mouse, and a single glass of water are allowed.
  • Private room: You must be in a room with a closed door. No other people may enter the room during your exam.
  • Quiet environment: Background noise can trigger a proctor warning. Choose a space where you will not be disturbed by family members, pets, deliveries, or other interruptions.
  • Wall visibility: The proctor may ask you to show the walls of your room with your webcam to verify that no reference materials are posted.
  • Lighting: Your face must be clearly visible to the webcam at all times. Avoid backlighting from windows, and ensure your room is well lit from the front.

Test Day Procedures

Here is what to expect on the day of your remotely proctored SHRM exam:

  1. Log in early: Plan to log in to the proctoring platform 15 to 30 minutes before your scheduled start time. Late arrivals may not be accommodated.
  2. Identity verification: You will need to show a valid, government-issued photo ID to the webcam. Make sure your ID is current and not expired.
  3. Room scan: The proctor will ask you to use your webcam to show a 360-degree view of your testing room, including under your desk and around your monitor.
  4. Rules review: The proctor will confirm the exam rules with you before you begin.
  5. Exam launch: Once the environment check is complete, the proctor will unlock your exam and you can begin.

During the Exam

While testing, keep these guidelines in mind to avoid any issues:

  • Do not look away from your screen for extended periods. The proctor may flag this as suspicious behavior.
  • Do not read questions aloud or talk to yourself.
  • Do not cover your mouth or face.
  • If you need a break, follow the exam's built-in break procedures. Unauthorized breaks may invalidate your exam.
  • If you experience a technical issue, use the chat feature to contact your proctor immediately.

Remote Proctoring vs. Testing Center

Both options have advantages. Remote proctoring eliminates travel time and allows you to test in a familiar environment. Testing centers provide dedicated equipment and a controlled setting where you do not need to worry about your internet connection or home distractions.

Consider your personal circumstances. If you have a reliable computer, stable internet, and a quiet space, remote proctoring is convenient. If you live in a busy household or have an unreliable internet connection, a testing center may be the safer choice.
