How SHRM Calculates Your Exam Score

Understanding how the SHRM exam is scored can reduce anxiety and help you set realistic expectations. SHRM uses a scaled scoring model rather than a simple percentage-correct approach. This means your raw score (the number of questions you answer correctly) is converted to a scaled score that accounts for differences in exam difficulty across testing windows.

Scaled Scoring Explained

The SHRM exam uses a scale of 120 to 200. The passing score is 200 on this scale. If that sounds confusing, think of it this way: the scale is designed so that a score of 200 always represents the same level of competency, regardless of which version of the exam you took.

This approach is necessary because different exam forms may vary slightly in difficulty. A candidate who takes a slightly harder version of the exam should not be penalized compared to one who takes a slightly easier version. Scaled scoring ensures fairness across all test forms.

What Does a Passing Score Mean?

A passing score of 200 indicates that you have demonstrated sufficient competency across all tested areas to be certified as an HR professional at the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP level. You do not need to achieve a specific score in each individual content area; the passing determination is based on your overall scaled score.

How Many Questions Do You Need to Get Right?

SHRM does not publish the exact number of correct answers required to pass, because this number varies depending on the difficulty of the specific exam form. However, based on the scoring model and candidate reports, most estimates suggest that answering approximately 65% to 70% of the scored questions correctly is in the range needed to pass.

Remember that only 110 of the 134 questions are scored. The remaining 24 are unscored pretest items. You do not know which questions are scored and which are not, so answer every question as if it counts.

Understanding Your Score Report

After your exam results are processed, you will receive a score report through your SHRM certification portal. The report includes:

Overall Result

Your report will clearly indicate whether you passed or did not pass. If you passed, it will confirm your certification and the effective date.

Scaled Score

Your overall scaled score on the 120 to 200 scale. A score of 200 or higher means you passed. Scores above 200 indicate that you exceeded the minimum competency threshold.

Performance by Content Area

While SHRM does not provide granular question-by-question feedback, your report may include general indicators of your performance across the major competency areas and knowledge domains. This information is especially useful if you need to prepare for a retake.

When Will You Receive Your Score?

SHRM typically releases exam results within 3 to 4 weeks after the close of the testing window. Note that results are released after the entire testing window closes, not after your individual exam date. This means if you test at the beginning of a window, you may wait longer for your results than someone who tests near the end.

You will receive an email notification when your results are available. Log into your SHRM certification portal to view your score report.

What Happens If You Pass

If you pass, congratulations! Your certification is effective as of the date you passed the exam. You will receive:

  • A digital certificate and badge for use on LinkedIn and professional profiles
  • A physical certificate mailed to your address on file
  • Access to the SHRM certified professional community and resources
  • The right to use the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credential after your name

What Happens If You Do Not Pass

If you do not pass, your score report provides information to guide your preparation for a retake. Review your performance areas carefully, adjust your study approach, and register for the next available testing window. There is no waiting period beyond the next testing window, and there is no limit on the number of attempts.

Common Scoring Misconceptions

  • Misconception: You need to score 70% to pass. The passing threshold is based on the scaled score of 200, not a fixed percentage. The percentage of correct answers needed varies by exam form.
  • Misconception: Harder questions are worth more points. All scored questions contribute equally to your raw score. There is no differential weighting based on difficulty.
  • Misconception: You are penalized for wrong answers. There is no penalty for incorrect answers. Always answer every question, even if you must guess.
  • Misconception: SJIs are weighted differently than knowledge items. While SJIs and knowledge items test different skills, both types contribute to your overall score in the same scoring framework.
