Overview of the SHRM Exam Structure

Understanding the exam format before you sit down to test is one of the most effective ways to reduce anxiety and improve performance. The SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams share the same structural framework, though the content depth and strategic emphasis differ between the two credentials.

Exam Length and Timing

Both the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams consist of 134 questions that must be completed within a 4-hour window. Of these 134 questions, 110 are scored and 24 are unscored pretest items. You will not know which questions are scored and which are pretest items, so treat every question as if it counts.

Time Allocation

With 134 questions in 240 minutes, you have approximately 1 minute and 47 seconds per question. However, situational judgment items typically require more time than knowledge items. A practical approach is to spend about 1 minute on straightforward knowledge questions and up to 2.5 minutes on complex situational judgment scenarios.

Question Types

The exam includes two distinct question types, each testing different aspects of HR competency.

Knowledge Items (Approximately 60% of the Exam)

Knowledge items are standalone multiple-choice questions that test your understanding of HR concepts, regulations, theories, and best practices. These questions have one clearly correct answer.

Example format: "Which federal law requires employers with 50 or more employees to provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave?" This type of question tests factual recall and conceptual understanding.

Situational Judgment Items (Approximately 40% of the Exam)

Situational judgment items (SJIs) present a workplace scenario followed by a question asking you to identify the best course of action. These questions often include multiple options that could be partially correct, but one answer is the most appropriate based on SHRM's competency framework.

SJIs may be presented as individual questions or as part of a set where multiple questions relate to the same scenario. Reading the scenario carefully before answering any associated questions is essential.

Content Areas and Weighting

The exam draws from the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge (SHRM BASK), which organizes content into behavioral competencies and HR knowledge domains.

Behavioral Competencies

  • Leadership: Leadership and Navigation, Ethical Practice
  • Business: Business Acumen, Consultation, Critical Evaluation
  • Interpersonal: Relationship Management, Communication, Global Mindset

HR Knowledge Domains

  • People: HR Strategic Planning, Talent Acquisition, Employee Engagement and Retention, Learning and Development, Total Rewards
  • Organization: Structure of the HR Function, Organizational Effectiveness and Development, Workforce Management, Employee and Labor Relations, Technology Management
  • Workplace: HR in the Global Context, Diversity and Inclusion, Risk Management, Corporate Social Responsibility, Employment Law and Regulations

Unscored Pretest Items

The 24 unscored questions are being field-tested for potential use on future exams. SHRM includes them to evaluate question quality and difficulty. Since you cannot identify which questions are unscored, do not waste time trying to guess. Answer every question to the best of your ability.

Exam Delivery Options

SHRM offers two testing options:

  • Computer-based testing at a Prometric center: You take the exam at a designated testing facility on a computer provided by the center.
  • Remote proctoring (SHRM Online Proctoring): You take the exam from your home or office while being monitored by a live proctor through your computer's camera and microphone.

Navigation and Review Features

The testing software allows you to flag questions for review and navigate forward and backward through the exam. Use these features strategically:

  • If you are unsure about a question, select your best answer, flag it, and move on
  • Return to flagged questions only after completing all other questions
  • Do not leave any question unanswered; there is no penalty for guessing

What You Cannot Bring

The exam is closed-book. You cannot bring notes, reference materials, phones, smartwatches, or any electronic devices into the testing area. The testing center provides a locker for personal belongings and supplies scratch paper or a whiteboard for notes during the exam.

Preparing for the Format

Familiarity with the exam format reduces test-day anxiety significantly. Take multiple practice exams that simulate real testing conditions, including the time limit, question types, and navigation features. The more comfortable you are with the format, the more you can focus on demonstrating your HR knowledge and judgment.
