Knowing the Rules Before Exam Day
One of the easiest ways to reduce exam day stress is to know exactly what you can and cannot bring to the SHRM testing center. Bringing a prohibited item can result in delays, confusion, or even having to leave personal belongings unsecured. Understanding the rules in advance lets you focus entirely on the exam rather than worrying about logistics.
Items Provided at the Testing Center
The On Screen Calculator
One of the most frequently asked questions about the SHRM exam is whether calculators are allowed. You do not need to bring your own calculator because the testing software includes an on screen calculator that you can access during the exam. This calculator handles basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and is sufficient for any calculations required on the exam.
Familiarize yourself with using an on screen calculator before exam day. If you typically rely on a physical calculator, practice performing HR calculations (such as turnover rate, cost per hire, or return on investment) using your computer's built in calculator to build comfort with the digital format.
Scratch Materials
The testing center provides erasable noteboards or scratch paper for your use during the exam. You can use these to jot down notes, work through calculations, or organize your thoughts on complex situational judgment questions. All scratch materials must be returned to the testing center staff when you finish the exam.
Required Items to Bring
Identification
You must bring valid identification to the testing center. The primary form of ID must be a government issued photo ID such as:
- Driver's license
- Passport
- Military ID
- State or government issued identification card
The name on your ID must exactly match the name on your exam registration. If your name has changed since you registered (due to marriage, for example), contact SHRM before exam day to update your registration or bring documentation of the name change.
Exam Confirmation
Bring your exam appointment confirmation email or number. While the testing center should have your appointment in their system, having your confirmation available helps resolve any check in issues quickly.
Prohibited Items
The following items are generally not allowed in the testing room:
- Electronic devices: Cell phones, smartwatches, fitness trackers, tablets, and any other electronic devices must be stored in a locker or your vehicle. They cannot be brought into the testing room.
- Personal calculators: Since an on screen calculator is provided, personal calculators are not permitted.
- Study materials: No books, notes, flashcards, or reference materials of any kind are allowed in the testing room.
- Bags and purses: Personal bags must be stored in the provided locker.
- Food and beverages: These are not allowed in the testing room, though you may store snacks in your locker for the break period.
- Outerwear: Coats, hats, scarves, and heavy jackets may need to be stored, depending on the testing center's policies.
Items You Should Bring (But Not Into the Testing Room)
These items can stay in your locker or vehicle and be accessed during the break:
- Snacks and water: A light snack and water for the break between exam sections can help maintain your energy and focus
- Medications: If you take medications at specific times, bring them to access during the break (consult the testing center about medical exceptions if you need medication during the exam)
- Sweater or light jacket: Testing rooms can be cool, and some centers allow a light sweater or jacket in the testing room. Check with your specific center in advance.
- Earplugs: Some testing centers provide earplugs or noise canceling headphones, and some allow you to bring your own disposable earplugs. Confirm with your center beforehand.
The Check In Process
Arrive at the testing center at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. The check in process typically includes:
- Presenting your identification
- Having your photograph taken
- Providing a digital signature
- Storing personal belongings in a locker
- Reviewing and agreeing to the testing center rules
- Being escorted to your assigned workstation
During the Break
The break between exam sections allows you to access your locker, use the restroom, have a snack, and stretch. You will need to check out and check back in with the testing center staff, which may include showing your ID again. Plan for this process to take a few minutes so you can maximize your actual break time.
Special Circumstances
If you have medical needs that require bringing items into the testing room (such as insulin, an inhaler, or medical devices), contact SHRM's accommodations team well in advance of your exam date. They can work with the testing center to make appropriate arrangements while maintaining exam security.
When in doubt about any item, contact your testing center directly before exam day. Policies can vary slightly between locations, and it is better to ask in advance than to deal with issues on the morning of your exam.
