SHRM Eligibility: What You Need to Know

One of the most common questions prospective SHRM candidates ask is whether they qualify to take the exam. The good news is that SHRM's approach to eligibility is more flexible than many other professional certification programs. Understanding the requirements helps you determine whether you are ready to pursue certification and which level is appropriate for your career stage.

SHRM's Approach to Eligibility

Unlike some certification bodies that enforce strict eligibility gates, SHRM takes a recommendation-based approach. SHRM provides guidelines for who should pursue each certification level, but candidates are not required to submit proof of education or experience as part of the application process. This means anyone can register for either the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP exam.

However, SHRM strongly recommends that candidates meet certain qualifications to ensure they are adequately prepared and that the certification they earn accurately reflects their professional level.

SHRM-CP Recommended Qualifications

The SHRM-CP is designed for HR professionals performing operational, tactical HR work. SHRM recommends the following qualifications:

Education and Experience Combinations

  • Less than a bachelor's degree: At least 3 years of experience in an HR role
  • Bachelor's degree in HR or a related field: At least 1 year of experience in an HR role
  • Bachelor's degree in a non-HR field: At least 2 years of experience in an HR role
  • Graduate degree in HR or a related field: Currently in an HR role (no minimum experience)
  • Graduate degree in a non-HR field: At least 1 year of experience in an HR role

What Counts as HR Experience?

SHRM defines qualifying HR experience broadly. It includes work in any of the following areas:

  • Talent acquisition and staffing
  • Employee relations and engagement
  • Compensation and benefits administration
  • HR compliance and policy implementation
  • Training and development
  • HR information systems and data management
  • Workforce planning and organizational development

SHRM-SCP Recommended Qualifications

The SHRM-SCP is designed for HR professionals operating at a strategic, policy-making level. SHRM recommends more extensive experience for this credential.

Education and Experience Combinations

  • Less than a bachelor's degree: At least 6 years of experience in a strategic HR role
  • Bachelor's degree in HR or a related field: At least 4 years of experience in a strategic HR role
  • Bachelor's degree in a non-HR field: At least 5 years of experience in a strategic HR role
  • Graduate degree in HR or a related field: At least 3 years of experience in a strategic HR role
  • Graduate degree in a non-HR field: At least 4 years of experience in a strategic HR role

What Counts as Strategic HR Experience?

Strategic HR experience goes beyond executing daily HR tasks. It includes:

  • Developing and implementing HR strategies aligned with organizational goals
  • Leading organizational change initiatives
  • Advising senior leadership on HR-related decisions
  • Designing and evaluating HR programs and policies
  • Analyzing workforce data to drive business decisions
  • Managing HR budgets and resource allocation
  • Overseeing HR functions or teams

Special Circumstances

Students and Recent Graduates

Students currently enrolled in an HR or business degree program may be eligible for the SHRM-CP exam. SHRM has partnered with many universities to offer student membership and exam preparation as part of their academic programs. Check with your school's HR or business department to see if they participate in the SHRM academic program.

Career Changers

If you are transitioning into HR from another profession, you can still pursue SHRM certification. Any transferable experience in people management, training, compliance, or organizational development may count toward the experience recommendations. Additionally, completing an HR certificate program or graduate degree can strengthen your qualifications.

International Candidates

SHRM certifications are available to HR professionals worldwide. International experience in HR functions counts toward the experience recommendations. The exam content, while developed with a U.S. perspective, includes global HR concepts that are relevant across borders.

Choosing the Right Level

If you are uncertain whether to pursue the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP, consider these guidelines:

  • If most of your HR work involves implementing policies, processing transactions, or supporting daily operations, the SHRM-CP is the right choice
  • If most of your HR work involves setting strategy, advising executives, managing teams, or designing programs, the SHRM-SCP is appropriate
  • When in doubt, start with the SHRM-CP and pursue the SHRM-SCP later as your career evolves

Audit Process

While SHRM does not require documentation at the time of registration, SHRM reserves the right to audit candidates. If selected for an audit, you may need to provide documentation supporting your education and experience. Maintaining accurate records of your HR roles, responsibilities, and educational credentials is a prudent practice.
