Is Remote Proctoring Right for You?

SHRM offers the option to take your certification exam from home or office through online remote proctoring. This eliminates the need to travel to a Prometric testing center and allows you to test in a familiar environment. However, remote proctoring comes with specific technical requirements and rules that you must follow strictly.

Before choosing remote proctoring, honestly evaluate whether your home or office environment can meet the requirements. A quiet, private space with reliable internet is essential.

Technical Requirements

Computer Requirements

  • Desktop or laptop computer (tablets and Chromebooks are not supported)
  • Windows 10 or later, or macOS 10.13 or later
  • A working webcam (built-in or external)
  • A working microphone (built-in or external)
  • Minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768
  • At least 2 GB of RAM

Internet Requirements

  • Stable broadband internet connection
  • Minimum download speed of 2 Mbps (5 Mbps or higher recommended)
  • Minimum upload speed of 2 Mbps
  • Wired Ethernet connection strongly recommended over Wi-Fi

Software Requirements

  • You will need to download and install the proctoring software before your exam date
  • Close all other applications before launching the exam
  • Disable pop-up notifications, automatic updates, and screen savers
  • Temporarily disable antivirus software if it blocks the proctoring application

Room and Environment Setup

Your testing environment must meet strict standards. The proctor will verify your setup through your webcam before the exam begins.

Room Requirements

  • A private, enclosed room with a door that can be closed
  • No other people may be present in the room during the exam
  • Adequate lighting so your face is clearly visible on camera
  • A clean desk or table with only your computer, keyboard, mouse, and approved items
  • No books, notes, papers, or reference materials visible
  • No additional monitors or screens

What Is Allowed on Your Desk

  • Your computer and its peripherals
  • A single glass or bottle of water (no label)
  • Your identification documents for check-in

What Is Not Allowed

  • Cell phones, smartwatches, or any electronic devices (besides your testing computer)
  • Headphones or earbuds
  • Notes, textbooks, or any written materials
  • Food (beyond the approved water)
  • Whiteboards or scratch paper (the software provides a digital notepad)

Check-In Process

Plan to begin the check-in process 30 minutes before your scheduled exam time. The process includes:

  • Launching the proctoring software
  • Presenting your identification to the camera
  • Performing a 360-degree room scan with your webcam
  • Showing the proctor your desk surface, including underneath
  • Removing any prohibited items identified by the proctor
  • Agreeing to the exam policies and rules

During the Exam

Once the exam begins, the proctor monitors you continuously through your webcam and microphone. Follow these rules strictly:

  • Keep your face visible on camera at all times
  • Do not leave the camera view for any reason without notifying the proctor
  • Do not read questions aloud or mumble
  • Do not look away from your screen for extended periods
  • If you need a break, notify the proctor through the chat function (the timer will not pause)

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Internet Disconnection

If your internet connection drops during the exam, the proctoring software will attempt to reconnect automatically. Your exam progress is saved. If the disconnection is prolonged, contact the proctor support line immediately.

Software Crashes

If the proctoring software crashes, do not restart your computer immediately. Wait 30 seconds and try relaunching the application. If the problem persists, contact technical support.

Proctor Communication Issues

If you cannot communicate with your proctor, use the chat function within the proctoring software. If chat is unavailable, call the support number provided in your confirmation email.

Tips for a Smooth Remote Testing Experience

  • Test your setup at least 3 days before your exam using the system check tool provided by the proctoring service
  • Use a wired internet connection if possible
  • Inform household members that you cannot be disturbed during your testing window
  • Put pets in another room
  • Close all unnecessary programs and browser tabs before starting
  • Have the proctoring support phone number written down in case you need it
