What Is the Inclusive Mindset Competency?
Inclusive Mindset is a behavioral competency within the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge (BASK) that reflects the profession's recognition that creating inclusive workplaces requires specific skills and deliberate practice. This competency encompasses the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to value all types of diversity, create environments where every individual feels welcomed and valued, and integrate inclusion principles into HR practices and organizational culture.
The competency appears on both the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams through knowledge-based questions and situational judgment items.
Understanding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Diversity refers to the presence of differences within a group, including demographic characteristics, cognitive characteristics, and identity characteristics.
Equity refers to fairness and justice in how people are treated and how resources and opportunities are distributed. Equitable practices may involve providing different levels of support to ensure all individuals have a fair opportunity to succeed.
Inclusion refers to creating an environment where all individuals feel valued, respected, and able to contribute fully. An organization can be diverse without being inclusive if members of underrepresented groups feel marginalized.
Key Knowledge Areas for the Exam
Unconscious Bias
Common types of bias tested on the SHRM exams include:
