The Complete 90-Day SHRM Exam Study Plan

A structured 90-day study plan for SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exam preparation, broken into weekly goals with specific milestones.

July 3, 2025

Why 90 Days Is the Ideal Study Timeline

A 90-day preparation window gives you enough time to thoroughly cover all SHRM exam content without losing momentum or burning out. This timeline allows approximately 10 to 12 hours of study per week, which is manageable for working professionals juggling careers and personal responsibilities.

This plan works for both SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP candidates. The content areas are the same; the difference lies in the depth and strategic perspective of the questions. Adjust your focus based on which exam you are pursuing.

Before You Begin: Preparation Checklist

  • Register for your exam and confirm your testing date
  • Obtain your primary study materials (SHRM Learning System or equivalent)
  • Set up a dedicated study space free from distractions
  • Block study time on your calendar for the next 90 days
  • Take a diagnostic practice exam to identify your baseline

Phase 1: Foundation Building (Days 1 to 30)

The first month focuses on building a solid understanding of all content areas. Read through the material methodically, taking notes as you go.

Weeks 1 and 2: Leadership and Business Competencies

  • Study the Leadership competency cluster: leadership and navigation, ethical practice
  • Study the Business competency cluster: business acumen, consultation, critical evaluation
  • Complete end-of-chapter review questions
  • Create flashcards for key terms and concepts
  • Weekly goal: 12 hours of study

Weeks 3 and 4: Interpersonal and People Competencies

  • Study the Interpersonal competency cluster: relationship management, communication, global mindset
  • Study the People knowledge domain: HR strategic planning, talent acquisition, employee engagement
  • Complete practice questions for each section
  • Review and reinforce Week 1 and 2 material
  • Weekly goal: 12 hours of study

Phase 2: Deep Dive (Days 31 to 60)

The second month is about going deeper into the content and building your analytical skills. This is where you shift from reading to active application.

Weeks 5 and 6: Organization and Workplace Knowledge Domains

  • Study organizational effectiveness and development
  • Study workforce management and employment law
  • Cover technology management, risk management, and corporate social responsibility
  • Begin integrating situational judgment question practice
  • Weekly goal: 12 hours of study

Weeks 7 and 8: Integration and Application

  • Complete cross-domain practice question sets
  • Focus on connecting concepts across competency areas
  • Take a mid-point practice exam under timed conditions
  • Identify your three weakest areas and create targeted study plans for each
  • Weekly goal: 14 hours of study

Phase 3: Mastery and Review (Days 61 to 90)

The final month is dedicated to practice testing, weak-area remediation, and building exam-day confidence.

Weeks 9 and 10: Intensive Practice Testing

  • Take two full-length practice exams (one per week)
  • Review every incorrect answer thoroughly
  • Study the rationale behind correct answers, not just the facts
  • Continue targeted study of weak areas
  • Weekly goal: 14 hours of study

Weeks 11 and 12: Final Review and Confidence Building

  • Take one final full-length practice exam early in Week 11
  • Review all flashcards and summary notes
  • Focus on high-frequency topics and commonly tested regulations
  • Reduce study intensity in the final 3 days to avoid burnout
  • Confirm all exam day logistics
  • Weekly goal: 10 hours (tapering in the final days)

Weekly Study Session Structure

Each study session should follow a consistent pattern:

  • First 10 minutes: review flashcards and notes from your previous session
  • Next 60 to 90 minutes: new content study or practice questions
  • Final 15 minutes: summarize what you learned and note any areas needing review

Tracking Your Progress

Keep a simple log of your study hours, topics covered, and practice exam scores. This helps you stay accountable and provides clear evidence of your improvement over time. If your practice scores plateau, adjust your approach by spending more time on active practice and less time on passive reading.

Adjusting the Plan

Life happens. If you miss a study session, do not try to double up the next day. Instead, extend your overall timeline by a day or prioritize the most important material. Consistency matters more than perfection.
