About the NCE
The National Counselor Examination (NCE) is a 200-question, multiple-choice exam administered by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). It is the most widely used exam for professional counselor licensure in the United States and is required for the National Certified Counselor (NCC) credential. The NCE is also accepted by most state licensing boards as the qualifying exam for Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), and similar credentials.
The exam is computer-based and administered at Pearson VUE testing centers nationwide. Of the 200 questions, 160 are scored and 40 are unscored pretest items used for future exam development. You are given 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete the exam. The NCE covers 8 CACREP content areas that align with the core curriculum standards for counselor education programs. First-time pass rates are approximately 70-75%, making thorough preparation essential for success.

Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the NCE?
The NCE contains 200 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 160 are scored items that count toward your pass/fail result, and 40 are unscored pretest items that NBCC uses for future exam development. You will not know which questions are scored and which are pretest items, so you should treat every question as if it counts.
What is the NCE pass rate?
The NCE pass rate for first-time test takers is approximately 70-75%, though this varies by graduate program and year. Candidates from CACREP-accredited programs tend to have higher pass rates. Thorough preparation with practice questions that mirror the actual exam format significantly improves your chances of passing on the first attempt.
What content areas does the NCE cover?
The NCE covers 8 CACREP content areas: Professional Counseling Orientation and Ethical Practice, Social and Cultural Diversity, Human Growth and Development, Career Development, Counseling and Helping Relationships, Group Counseling and Group Work, Assessment and Testing, and Research and Program Evaluation. Questions are distributed across all eight areas.
How long is the NCE exam?
You have 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete the 200 multiple-choice questions on the NCE. This gives you approximately 1 minute and 7 seconds per question. Most candidates finish with time remaining, but practicing under timed conditions helps ensure you can pace yourself effectively on exam day.
Can you retake the NCE if you fail?
Yes, you can retake the NCE if you do not pass. You will need to pay the full exam fee again (approximately $275) and there is a waiting period before you can retest. The waiting period varies depending on your state board or NBCC policies. Using your score report to identify weak content areas and focusing your study on those topics will help you succeed on your next attempt.
How is the NCE scored?
The NCE uses a scaled scoring system. Your raw score (number of correct answers out of 160 scored items) is converted to a scaled score. The cut score, which is the minimum passing score, is set by NBCC using a criterion-referenced standard-setting process. There is no penalty for guessing, so you should answer every question even if you are unsure.
