About the LMSW exam

The LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker) exam is the ASWB Masters Level Examination, administered by the Association of Social Work Boards. It is the primary licensing exam for social workers who have completed a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree and want to begin practicing under supervision. For many social workers, the LMSW is the first professional license they earn after graduate school.

The exam consists of 170 multiple-choice questions, of which 150 are scored and 20 are unscored pretest items. You have 4 hours to complete the exam. It is administered at Pearson VUE testing centers nationwide, and you receive a preliminary pass/fail result immediately upon completion.

Unlike the LCSW, the LMSW does not require post-degree supervised clinical experience. You can take the exam as soon as you complete your MSW, making it the fastest path to professional social work licensure. The current exam fee is $260.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the LMSW exam?

The ASWB Masters exam contains 170 multiple-choice questions. Of those, 150 are scored and 20 are unscored pretest items being evaluated for future exams. You will not know which questions are pretest items, so you should answer every question to the best of your ability.

What is the difference between LMSW and LCSW?

The LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker) is a masters-level license that requires only an MSW degree and passing the ASWB Masters exam. No post-degree supervised clinical experience is needed. The LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) is a clinical-level license that requires an MSW, passing the ASWB Clinical exam, and completing thousands of hours of supervised clinical experience (typically 2 to 3 years). The LCSW allows independent clinical practice and diagnosing, while the LMSW typically requires supervision for clinical work.

What is the LMSW exam pass rate?

The ASWB Masters exam has a first-time pass rate of approximately 75%. Graduates from CSWE-accredited programs and candidates who use structured exam prep materials tend to pass at higher rates. Retake pass rates are significantly lower, which is why thorough preparation before your first attempt is critical.

What are the requirements for the LMSW exam?

To sit for the LMSW exam, you must hold a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from a CSWE-accredited program and submit an application through your state licensing board. Unlike the LCSW, no post-degree supervised clinical experience is required. Your state board will verify your eligibility and authorize you to register with Pearson VUE for the exam.

What does the ASWB Masters exam cover?

The ASWB Masters exam covers four content areas: Human Development, Diversity, and Behavior in the Environment (24%), Assessment and Intervention Planning (21%), Interventions with Clients/Client Systems (26%), and Professional Relationships, Values, and Ethics (29%). Questions test your ability to apply social work knowledge, not simply recall facts.

How soon after graduating can I take the LMSW exam?

This varies by state. Many states allow you to apply for the exam immediately after completing your MSW degree, even before your diploma is officially conferred. Some states require that your program director verify your degree completion directly. Check with your state social work licensing board for specific timelines and requirements.
