A client presents with depressed mood, insomnia, poor appetite, and difficulty concentrating for the past 3 weeks following the death of their spouse. The client denies suicidal ideation but reports feelings of guilt about "not doing enough." What is the MOST appropriate initial clinical action?
Explanation
While many of these symptoms overlap with normal grief reactions, the clinician should carefully assess whether the presentation reflects uncomplicated bereavement or has crossed into a clinically significant depressive episode. The DSM-5-TR removed the bereavement exclusion, recognizing that major depression can co-occur with grief. Factors to evaluate include the severity, duration, and functional impairment of symptoms, as well as the presence of pervasive feelings of worthlessness (distinct from guilt about the deceased). Jumping to a diagnosis without this assessment, or dismissing all symptoms as normal grief, could both lead to inappropriate clinical decisions.
Why daily practice works
Spaced repetition
Seeing concepts at regular intervals strengthens long-term memory. A daily question ensures you revisit key topics before you forget them, reducing the total study time needed to retain clinical knowledge.
Low commitment, high consistency
Answering one question takes under two minutes. That low barrier makes it easy to maintain a daily streak even during busy clinical rotations or supervision sessions.
Identify weak spots early
When you consistently miss questions in a specific area like ethics, assessment, or treatment planning, you know exactly where to focus your deeper study sessions.
All exam types covered
Questions rotate through LCSW, LMSW, NCE, and NCMHCE so you maintain familiarity with all content domains. This is especially valuable if you plan to take multiple exams.

Every day, we publish a new practice question drawn from one of the four exam types: LCSW, LMSW, NCE, or NCMHCE. You can answer the question, see the correct answer, and read a detailed explanation. Questions rotate through all exam types so you get balanced coverage over time.
Is the daily question really free?
Yes. The daily question is completely free with no credit card required. You can access it every day without creating an account. If you want access to our full question bank of 4,000+ questions, flashcards, and practice exams, you can sign up for a paid plan.
What exam types do the daily questions cover?
Daily questions rotate across all four exam types: LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker), NCE (National Counselor Examination), and NCMHCE (National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination). Each question includes the exam label so you know which area it targets.
Can a daily question habit really help me pass my licensing exam?
Research on spaced repetition shows that short, consistent study sessions are more effective for long-term retention than occasional cramming. A daily question keeps clinical concepts, ethical standards, and DSM-5-TR criteria fresh in your memory and helps you identify weak areas before exam day.
Are the questions updated for the 2026 ASWB exam changes?
Yes. All of our questions, including the daily question rotation, reflect the 2026 ASWB exam content outline changes. We continuously update our question bank to align with the latest exam blueprints from both ASWB and NBCC.
