Steps to Becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor in Wisconsin
A practical guide to earning your Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential in Wisconsin, from the DSPS education requirements to supervised training, exams, and renewals.
Becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Wisconsin
Wisconsin licenses professional counselors through the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS), specifically the Examining Board of Professional Counselors. The state also offers the Licensed Professional Counselor in Training (LPC-IT) status for those completing supervised experience.
Education Requirements
You must hold a master's or doctoral degree in counseling or a closely related field from an accredited institution. The program must include at least 48 semester hours of graduate coursework. CACREP-accredited programs satisfy the education requirements. Required coursework areas include:
- Counseling theory and practice
- Human growth and development
- Social and cultural foundations
- Group counseling
- Career and lifestyle development
- Appraisal and assessment
- Research and evaluation
- Professional ethics
- A supervised practicum or internship
Supervised Experience Hours
Wisconsin requires 3,000 hours of supervised professional counseling experience completed over at least two years. At least 1,000 hours must be in direct client contact. You will practice under LPC-IT status during this period.
Your supervisor must hold a current Wisconsin LPC and be approved by the board. You must receive at least one hour of individual face-to-face supervision per week. Group supervision may supplement but not replace individual supervision.
Exam Requirements
Wisconsin requires passage of the National Counselor Examination (NCE). The exam fee is approximately $275. You may take the NCE after completing your degree. Wisconsin does not require a separate state jurisprudence exam.
Application Process and Fees
Apply for LPC-IT status through the DSPS online portal. The application fee is approximately $75. After completing your supervised experience and passing the NCE, apply for full LPC licensure with a fee of approximately $75. Submit transcripts, supervision documentation, and exam verification.
License Renewal
LPC licenses in Wisconsin renew every two years on a biennial cycle ending on your birth month. You must complete 40 hours of continuing education per cycle, including at least 3 hours in ethics. The renewal fee is approximately $75.
Reciprocity and Endorsement
Wisconsin offers endorsement-based licensure for counselors licensed in other states. You must demonstrate education and experience equivalent to Wisconsin's standards and have passed the NCE. Wisconsin evaluates each application individually and may require additional coursework or experience for applicants from states with lower requirements.
