Pennsylvania LPC Licensure: Requirements, Exams, and Process
Step-by-step instructions for obtaining your Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential in Pennsylvania, including education, supervised experience, NCE exam, and board application.
Becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania licenses professional counselors through the State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors. The LPC credential allows you to practice counseling independently in the state. Here is what you need to know to earn your license.
Education Requirements
You must hold a master's or doctoral degree in counseling or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution. The degree program must include at least 48 semester hours of graduate coursework, and a minimum of 60 semester hours is required for those seeking to diagnose and treat mental disorders. Core coursework areas include:
- Counseling theory and practice
- Human growth and development
- Social and cultural foundations
- Group dynamics and counseling
- Career and lifestyle development
- Appraisal and assessment
- Research and evaluation
- Professional orientation and ethics
- Supervised practicum or internship
CACREP-accredited programs are strongly recommended, as they are generally accepted without additional review. Graduates of non-CACREP programs may need to provide detailed syllabi for each course.
Supervised Experience Hours
Pennsylvania requires 3,600 hours of supervised clinical experience completed over at least two years. During this period, you must accumulate at least 1,800 hours of direct client contact. You will practice under a provisional license while completing these hours.
Your supervisor must hold an active Pennsylvania LPC or equivalent license and must have completed at least five years of clinical practice. You need a minimum of two hours of supervision per week, with at least one hour being individual supervision.
Exam Requirements
Pennsylvania requires passage of the National Counselor Examination (NCE). The NCE is a 200-question multiple choice exam covering eight core content areas aligned with CACREP standards. The exam fee is approximately $275, paid to NBCC. You may sit for the NCE after completing your degree.
Application Process and Fees
Apply for a provisional license through the Pennsylvania licensing board website. The application fee is approximately $45. After completing your supervised hours and passing the NCE, apply for full LPC licensure with an additional fee of approximately $45. Submit official transcripts, supervision documentation, and exam score verification.
License Renewal
LPC licenses in Pennsylvania renew every two years on a biennial cycle. You must complete 30 hours of continuing education per renewal period. At least 3 hours must cover ethics, and at least 3 hours must address cultural competency or diversity. The renewal fee is approximately $90.
Reciprocity and Endorsement
Pennsylvania allows licensure by endorsement for counselors licensed in other states, provided their qualifications are substantially equivalent. You must demonstrate equivalent education, supervised experience, and exam completion. If you have been licensed for more than six years and meet the education requirements, some supervised experience requirements may be waived.
