Michigan Counseling License: How to Become an LPC

Step-by-step guide to becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Michigan, covering education, supervised experience, the NCE exam, and LARA application details.

Becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Michigan

Michigan licenses professional counselors through the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), specifically the Board of Counseling. Michigan offers the LPC for independently practicing counselors and the Limited Licensed Professional Counselor (LLPC) for those still under supervision.

Education Requirements

You must hold a master's or doctoral degree in counseling from a program that is at least 48 semester hours in length. CACREP-accredited programs are preferred. The program must include coursework in the following areas:

  • Counseling theories
  • Counseling techniques and methods
  • Human development
  • Group counseling
  • Assessment and appraisal
  • Career development
  • Research and evaluation
  • Professional ethics and legal issues
  • Multicultural counseling
  • A supervised practicum and internship

Supervised Experience Hours

After earning your degree, you must complete 3,000 hours of supervised counseling experience over at least a two-year period. Of these hours, at least 100 must be in direct supervision with a board-approved supervisor. You will practice as an LLPC during this period.

Your supervisor must hold a full LPC in Michigan and have been licensed for at least two years. You need a minimum of one hour of individual supervision per week during active practice.

Exam Requirements

Michigan requires passage of the National Counselor Examination (NCE). The exam costs approximately $275 and is administered by NBCC. You may take the NCE once your degree has been conferred. Michigan does not require a separate state-specific jurisprudence exam.

Application Process and Fees

Apply for your LLPC through the LARA online portal. The application fee is approximately $78. After completing your supervised hours and passing the NCE, apply for full LPC licensure with a fee of approximately $78. You will need to submit transcripts, exam verification, supervision documentation, and pass a criminal background check.

License Renewal

LPC licenses in Michigan renew every two years. You must complete 25 hours of continuing education per renewal cycle, including at least 2 hours in ethics and 2 hours in pain management and pain assessment. The renewal fee is approximately $78.

Reciprocity and Endorsement

Michigan allows licensure by endorsement for counselors holding valid licenses in other states. You must meet education requirements equivalent to Michigan's standards, have passed the NCE, and have a minimum of 3,000 hours of supervised experience. Submit an endorsement application through LARA for review.
