How to Get Your LMHC in Massachusetts: A Detailed Guide

Everything you need to know about earning your Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) credential in Massachusetts, including Board of Registration requirements, exams, and supervised practice.

Becoming a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in Massachusetts

Massachusetts licenses mental health counselors through the Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Professions, a division of the Division of Professional Licensure. The LMHC credential allows for independent clinical practice, including diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders.

Education Requirements

You must hold a master's or doctoral degree in mental health counseling or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution. The program must include at least 60 semester hours of graduate coursework. Required coursework areas include:

  • Theories of counseling and psychotherapy
  • Abnormal psychology or psychopathology
  • Human growth and development
  • Assessment and appraisal
  • Group counseling
  • Research methods
  • Professional ethics and law
  • Social and cultural foundations
  • A supervised practicum and internship totaling at least 1,000 hours

Massachusetts places special emphasis on the practicum and internship component, requiring more clinical training hours during the degree than many other states.

Supervised Experience Hours

After completing your degree, you must accumulate 3,360 hours of post-master's supervised clinical experience over at least two years. Of these hours, at least 960 must be in direct client contact. You will hold the title of Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Provisional (LMHC-P) during this period.

Your supervisor must hold an active LMHC or equivalent license in Massachusetts with appropriate supervisory experience. You must receive at least one hour of individual supervision per week.

Exam Requirements

Massachusetts requires passage of the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE). The exam costs approximately $275 and is administered by NBCC. You may take the exam once your degree is conferred. Massachusetts does not require a separate state jurisprudence exam.

Application Process and Fees

Apply for LMHC-P status through the Division of Professional Licensure. The provisional license fee is approximately $253. After completing your supervised experience and passing the NCMHCE, apply for full LMHC licensure with a fee of approximately $253. Submit official transcripts, supervision documentation, and exam verification.

License Renewal

LMHC licenses in Massachusetts renew every two years. You must complete 30 hours of continuing education per cycle. Required topics include ethics (at least 3 hours), cultural competency, and suicide prevention. The renewal fee is approximately $253.

Reciprocity and Endorsement

Massachusetts allows endorsement-based licensure for counselors licensed in other states. Your credentials must be equivalent to Massachusetts requirements. Given the state's 60-credit education standard and significant clinical training requirements, counselors from states with lower thresholds may need additional preparation. Contact the board directly to have your qualifications evaluated.

Additional Information

Massachusetts has a strong demand for licensed mental health counselors, particularly in the greater Boston area, community health centers, and educational institutions. The state's comprehensive behavioral health parity laws mean that LMHCs are recognized by most insurance companies, making private practice a viable option for licensees.
