Getting Licensed as a Counselor in Louisiana: LPC Requirements

A thorough guide to earning your Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential in Louisiana, covering the LPC Board of Examiners education requirements, supervised experience, exams, and fees.

Becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Louisiana

Louisiana regulates professional counselors through the Louisiana LPC Board of Examiners. The state offers the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) for independent practice and the Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor (PLPC) for those completing their supervised experience. Louisiana has well-defined requirements that make the licensure process clear and structured.

Education Requirements

You must hold a master's or doctoral degree in counseling from a regionally accredited institution. The program must include at least 48 semester hours of graduate coursework. CACREP-accredited programs meet all education requirements. Core coursework must cover:

  • Counseling theories and techniques
  • Human growth and development
  • Social and cultural foundations
  • Group dynamics and counseling
  • Career and lifestyle development
  • Appraisal and assessment
  • Research and program evaluation
  • Professional orientation and ethics
  • Diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders
  • A supervised practicum and internship

If your program was not CACREP-accredited, you may need to provide syllabi and course descriptions for board review.

Supervised Experience Hours

Louisiana requires 3,000 hours of supervised professional counseling experience under an approved supervisor. At least 1,500 hours must be in direct client contact. The experience must be completed over a minimum of two years. You will practice as a PLPC while accruing hours.

Your supervisor must be a Louisiana LPC with board-approved supervisor status. You need at least one hour of individual face-to-face supervision per week. Group supervision may supplement but not replace individual supervision. Your supervisor must submit quarterly reports to the board documenting your progress.

Exam Requirements

Louisiana requires passage of the National Counselor Examination (NCE). The NCE costs approximately $275 and is administered by NBCC. You may take the exam after completing your degree and obtaining PLPC status. Louisiana does not require a state-specific exam, but you are expected to know the state's laws and ethical standards.

Application Process and Fees

Apply for PLPC status through the Louisiana LPC Board of Examiners. The PLPC application fee is approximately $100. After completing your supervised hours and passing the NCE, apply for full LPC licensure with a fee of approximately $100. Submit official transcripts, exam verification, supervision documentation, and a criminal background check.

License Renewal

LPC licenses in Louisiana renew annually. You must complete 20 hours of continuing education per year, including at least 3 hours in ethics and 3 hours in a clinical topic area. The annual renewal fee is approximately $100. Louisiana is one of the states requiring annual renewal, so staying on top of your CE schedule is important.

Reciprocity and Endorsement

Louisiana offers endorsement for counselors licensed in other states. You must hold an active, unrestricted license, meet education and experience equivalency, and have passed the NCE. The board evaluates each endorsement application to determine if additional requirements are necessary. Louisiana also participates in interstate compact discussions to facilitate licensure mobility for counselors.

Scope of Practice

Louisiana LPCs are authorized to provide individual, group, couples, and family counseling. They may diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders using accepted counseling techniques. LPCs in Louisiana cannot prescribe medication but can refer clients to psychiatrists or other prescribers when pharmacological treatment is indicated. Understanding your scope of practice is essential for ethical and legal compliance.
