Alabama LPC Licensure: Requirements and Application Process

Understand what it takes to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Alabama, from the Board of Examiners in Counseling education standards to supervised experience and exam requirements.

Becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Alabama

Alabama licenses professional counselors through the Alabama Board of Examiners in Counseling (ABEC). The LPC credential authorizes independent counseling practice. Alabama also offers the Associate Licensed Counselor (ALC) status for those working toward full licensure under supervision.

Education Requirements

You must hold a master's or doctoral degree in counseling from a CACREP-accredited program, or an equivalent program from a regionally accredited institution. The program must include at least 48 semester hours of graduate coursework (60 hours preferred). Required coursework includes:

  • Counseling theories and techniques
  • Human growth and development
  • Social and cultural foundations
  • Group counseling
  • Career and lifestyle development
  • Assessment and appraisal
  • Research and evaluation
  • Professional orientation and ethics
  • Diagnosis and psychopathology
  • A supervised practicum and internship totaling at least 600 hours

Supervised Experience Hours

Alabama requires 3,000 hours of post-master's supervised counseling experience for full LPC licensure. At least 1,500 hours must be in direct client contact. The supervised experience must be completed over at least two years. You will practice as an ALC during this time.

Your supervisor must hold an active Alabama LPC with board-approved supervisor status and must have been licensed for at least five years. You must receive at least one hour of individual face-to-face supervision for every 20 hours of client contact, with a minimum of one hour per week.

Exam Requirements

Alabama requires passage of the National Counselor Examination (NCE). The exam fee is approximately $275. You may take the NCE after your degree is conferred and you have registered as an ALC. Alabama does not require a state-specific jurisprudence exam.

Application Process and Fees

Apply for ALC status through ABEC. The ALC application fee is approximately $200. After completing your supervised experience and passing the NCE, apply for full LPC licensure with a fee of approximately $200. Submit transcripts, supervision verification, exam scores, and complete a criminal background check.

License Renewal

LPC licenses in Alabama renew every two years. You must complete 24 hours of continuing education per cycle, including at least 3 hours in ethics. Alabama also requires continuing education in topics related to your area of practice. The renewal fee is approximately $200.

Reciprocity and Endorsement

Alabama offers endorsement-based licensure for counselors licensed in other states. You must hold an active, unrestricted license and demonstrate that your qualifications are equivalent to Alabama's standards. You must have passed the NCE. ABEC reviews endorsement applications individually and may require additional documentation.
