BCBA Measurement Exam Tips

Strategies for passing the Measurement, Data Display & Interpretation section of the BCBA exam.

01

Know when to use each measurement procedure

The exam tests your ability to select the right measurement method for a given scenario. Use frequency/rate for discrete behaviors with a clear onset and offset. Use duration for behaviors where time engaged is important. Use latency when response time matters. Use interval recording when continuous measurement is not feasible.

02

Practice calculating IOA

You may see calculation questions on the exam. Practice total count IOA, exact agreement IOA, and trial-by-trial IOA. Know the formula for each and when each method is most appropriate. Remember that 80% or higher is generally considered acceptable IOA.

03

Master single-subject designs

Know the strengths and limitations of each design. Reversal designs demonstrate control but cannot be used when the behavior cannot be reversed. Multiple baselines are versatile but require independence across tiers. Changing criterion designs are ideal for shaping-based interventions.

04

Practice visual analysis

Expect questions that show you a graph and ask you to interpret the data. Look for changes in level (the average), trend (direction), and variability (spread) between conditions. A clear change in all three dimensions provides strong evidence of a functional relationship.

05

Know graphing conventions

The exam may ask about proper graphing procedures. Data points within the same condition are connected. Phase change lines separate conditions. The y-axis shows the dependent variable. The x-axis shows time or sessions. Condition labels appear at the top of each phase.
