BCBA Exam Day: Foundations Tips

What to expect and how to approach Philosophical Underpinnings, Concepts & Principles questions on exam day.

General BCBA Exam Day Reminders

Arrive Early

Arrive at the Pearson VUE testing center at least 30 minutes before your scheduled time. Bring two forms of valid ID.

Time Management

You have 4 hours for 185 questions. That is approximately 1.3 minutes per question. Do not spend more than 2 minutes on any single question.

Flag and Move On

If you are unsure about a question, flag it and move on. Return to flagged questions after completing the rest of the exam.

Read Every Option

Read all four answer choices before selecting one. The exam often includes plausible distractors that can trap candidates who rush.

Foundations Section Tips for Exam Day

1

The Foundations section makes up about 12% of the exam (approximately 22 questions out of 185). Allocate your time accordingly.

2

When you encounter a question about philosophical underpinnings, focus on the practical implications rather than abstract theory.

3

For verbal behavior questions, always identify the controlling variables (antecedent and consequence) before selecting your answer.

4

Motivating operation questions are common. Ask yourself: does this scenario increase or decrease the value of the reinforcer?

5

If a question asks about a schedule of reinforcement, think about the characteristic response pattern before looking at the answer choices.
