BCBA Ethics Exam Tips
Strategies for passing the Ethics, Professional Conduct, Supervision section of the BCBA exam.
Read the Ethics Code thoroughly
The BACB Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts is the primary reference for this section. Do not try to memorize every section, but read through it completely at least twice. Understand the intent behind each standard, not just the literal text.
Practice scenario-based reasoning
Ethics questions almost always present a scenario and ask what the behavior analyst should do. The correct answer is the one most consistent with the Ethics Code and best practices. Eliminate answers that violate ethical standards, even if they seem practical.
Know the hierarchy of ethical obligations
When ethical obligations conflict, the hierarchy generally prioritizes: (1) client welfare and safety, (2) legal requirements, (3) Ethics Code compliance, (4) organizational policies. If a question presents a conflict, prioritize client welfare.
Understand supervision requirements
The exam tests knowledge of supervision structure, volume, and quality. Know the required supervision ratios, the difference between individual and group supervision, and the supervisor's responsibility for supervisee conduct. This area has practical implications that appear frequently on the exam.
Focus on informed consent and confidentiality
These two topics appear repeatedly on the exam. Know when consent is required, what information must be provided, who can consent (and who provides assent), and the limits of confidentiality (e.g., mandatory reporting, danger to self or others).
