BCBA Exam Day: What to Bring, What to Expect & Time Management Tips

A complete guide to your BCBA exam day at Pearson VUE. Know exactly what to bring, what the check-in process looks like, and how to manage your time across 185 questions in 4 hours.

Before exam day

The week before

  • Confirm your Pearson VUE appointment date, time, and location
  • Drive to the testing center so you know the route and parking situation
  • Verify your IDs match your BACB registration name exactly
  • Take one more full-length practice exam if you have not recently
  • Review your weakest content areas but do not try to learn new material

The day before

  • Stop studying by early afternoon. Cramming the night before does not help.
  • Lay out your two forms of ID and your Pearson VUE confirmation
  • Set two alarms for the morning
  • Eat a normal dinner and go to bed at your usual time
  • If you feel anxious, remember: you have prepared for months. Trust your preparation.

The morning of

  • Eat a solid breakfast with protein and complex carbs for sustained energy
  • Avoid excessive caffeine (it increases anxiety and bathroom trips)
  • Wear layers so you can adjust to the testing room temperature
  • Leave early enough to arrive 30 to 45 minutes before your appointment
  • Do not study in the car or waiting room. You know what you know.

What to bring

Required

  • Primary ID: Government-issued photo ID with signature (driver's license, passport, state ID)
  • Secondary ID: ID with name and photo or signature (credit card, employee badge, second government ID)
  • Confirmation email: Your Pearson VUE appointment confirmation (on your phone is fine)

Not allowed in testing room

  • Phone, smartwatch, or any electronic device
  • Notes, books, flashcards, or study materials
  • Food, drinks, or gum
  • Wallet, keys, or jewelry (stored in a locker)
  • Jackets or hats with large pockets

Pearson VUE provides a secure locker for your personal items. Everything except your IDs and the locker key goes in the locker before you enter the testing room. You will receive an erasable note board and marker for scratch work.

The check-in process

Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before your scheduled time. The check-in process typically takes 10 to 15 minutes and includes:

  1. Present your two forms of ID at the front desk
  2. Your IDs are scanned and your name is verified against the BACB registration
  3. You read and sign the Pearson VUE testing agreement
  4. A photograph is taken (used for identification only)
  5. You empty your pockets and store all personal items in a locker
  6. A palm vein scan or other biometric may be taken (varies by location)
  7. You are escorted to your assigned computer station
  8. You receive an erasable note board and marker

The testing room is monitored by cameras and proctors. The room will have other test-takers (not necessarily taking the BCBA exam). Noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs are usually available if you need them.

Time management strategy

You have 4 hours (240 minutes) for 185 questions. That is approximately 1 minute and 18 seconds per question. Here is how to manage your time effectively.

First pass: answer what you know (0 to 2.5 hours)

Go through all 185 questions at a pace of about 1 minute each. Answer every question you feel confident about. For questions that require more thought, select your best guess, flag the question, and move on. Do not spend more than 2 minutes on any single question during the first pass. Your goal is to get through the entire exam once.

Second pass: review flagged questions (2.5 to 3.5 hours)

Return to your flagged questions with fresh eyes. You may find that later questions triggered knowledge that helps you answer earlier ones. Spend up to 2 to 3 minutes on each flagged question. If you are still unsure after careful consideration, go with your initial answer. First instincts are correct more often than changed answers.

Final check: ensure nothing is blank (3.5 to 4 hours)

Use the remaining time to verify that every question has an answer selected. There is no penalty for guessing, so never leave a question blank. Do a quick scan through the exam to catch any questions you may have accidentally skipped. Resist the urge to change answers unless you have a clear reason.

During the exam: mental strategies

Manage anxiety

If you feel overwhelmed, pause for 10 seconds. Take three slow breaths. Then read the next question. Anxiety peaks in the first 15 minutes and usually fades as you settle into a rhythm. This is normal.

Do not dwell on hard questions

Some questions will stump you. Flag them and move on. Spending 5 minutes on one question means less time for five other questions. Remember that some questions are unscored pilot items. The hard one you are stuck on might not even count.

Trust your preparation

If you followed a study plan and took multiple practice exams, you are more prepared than the average test-taker. The 49% pass rate includes candidates who underprepared. Your structured preparation puts you in a stronger position.

Stay hydrated but not too hydrated

Drink water before the exam. During the exam, you cannot have drinks at your station. If you need a restroom break, the clock keeps running. Strike a balance between hydration and minimizing disruptions.

After the exam

When you finish the exam (or time expires), you will see a preliminary pass/fail result on screen. This is unofficial but is rarely overturned. If you pass, congratulations. If you do not pass, remember that retaking is common and many successful BCBAs did not pass on their first attempt.

Official results are posted to your BACB account within 3 to 5 business days. If you passed, your BCBA certification number will be assigned within a few weeks, and you will appear in the BACB certificant registry.

Common Questions

What do I need to bring to the BCBA exam?

You need two forms of valid, unexpired identification. Your primary ID must be government-issued with a photo and signature (driver's license, passport, or state ID). Your secondary ID must include your name and either a photo or signature (credit card with signature, employee badge, or another government ID). Your name on the IDs must match your BACB registration exactly.

Can I take breaks during the BCBA exam?

You may request an unscheduled break at any time, but the exam clock does not stop. Your testing time continues to count down during any break you take. For this reason, most candidates minimize breaks or skip them entirely. Plan accordingly by using the restroom before the exam starts.

What happens if I arrive late to the BCBA exam?

Pearson VUE requires you to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled exam time. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, you may be turned away and forfeit your exam fee. Plan to arrive 30 to 45 minutes early to account for traffic, parking, and the check-in process.

When do I get my BCBA exam results?

You will receive a preliminary pass/fail result on screen immediately after completing the exam. Official results are typically posted to your BACB account within 3 to 5 business days. If you pass, your BCBA certification number is assigned within a few weeks.

Can I use scratch paper during the BCBA exam?

Pearson VUE provides an erasable note board (a laminated sheet with a marker) for scratch work. You cannot bring your own paper, pens, or any other materials into the testing room. The note board is collected at the end of the exam.

What if I have a disability or need accommodations?

You can request exam accommodations through the BACB before scheduling your exam. Accommodations may include extended time, a separate testing room, or assistive technology. Requests must be submitted with supporting documentation and approved before you schedule your Pearson VUE appointment.
