BACB Supervision Requirements

Current BACB supervision requirements for fieldwork hours.

Fieldwork Hours

BCBA candidates must complete 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork (or 1,500 hours of concentrated supervised fieldwork). Hours must be accrued over a minimum of 20 months (or 12 months for concentrated). Candidates may accrue no more than 130 hours per month (or 100 hours concentrated).

Supervision Ratios

Supervision must comprise at least 5% of total fieldwork hours each supervisory period (monthly). For 2,000 hours of fieldwork, that means at least 100 hours of supervision total. At least half of the supervision contacts each month must be individual (one-on-one) rather than group.

Supervisor Qualifications

Supervisors must be a BCBA or BCBA-D in good standing with the BACB. They must have completed an 8-hour supervision training. They must not supervise more trainees than they can effectively oversee while maintaining quality.

Supervision Activities

Supervision should include: direct observation of the supervisee delivering services, modeling and feedback, review of written materials (programs, data, reports), discussion of ethical issues and professional conduct, and performance evaluation against competency benchmarks.

Documentation

Supervisors must maintain documentation of: supervision dates and hours, activities during supervision, feedback provided, supervisee progress toward competency goals, and any corrective actions taken. Both supervisor and supervisee sign monthly verification forms.

Important Rules

Supervisees may not deliver services independently beyond their competence. The supervisor is responsible for the supervisee's work. If a supervisory relationship ends, the supervisee must find a new supervisor to continue accruing hours. Supervision cannot be provided retroactively.
