Can You Pass the BCBA Exam in Two Months?

Yes, but it requires discipline, focus, and a willingness to study consistently every day. A two-month study plan assumes you already have a solid foundation in ABA from your coursework and fieldwork. This is not a plan for learning ABA from scratch; it is a plan for organizing and reinforcing the knowledge you already have and filling in gaps efficiently.

You will need to dedicate approximately 15 to 20 hours per week to studying. That is roughly 2 to 3 hours per day on weekdays and 3 to 4 hours per day on weekends. If you cannot commit to this level of effort, consider extending your timeline to three or four months.

Before You Start: Baseline Assessment

Before beginning your study plan, take one full-length practice exam without studying. Do not worry about the score. The purpose is to identify your strengths and weaknesses by content area. This baseline tells you where to focus your limited time.

Score your baseline exam and categorize your errors by content area. Note which sections need the most work and which are already strong. This information will help you customize the plan below to your specific needs.

Week 1: Foundations, Part 1

Focus this week on the philosophical underpinnings and core concepts of behavior analysis.

  • Monday through Wednesday: Philosophical underpinnings, respondent conditioning, and operant conditioning. Study the basic principles thoroughly. Complete 30 to 40 practice questions on these topics.
  • Thursday and Friday: Schedules of reinforcement. Know all four basic schedules and their characteristic response patterns. Complete 20 practice questions.
  • Weekend: Review the week's material. Create flashcards for any concepts you struggled with. Complete 30 more practice questions mixing all topics covered.

Weekly total: approximately 18 hours

Week 2: Foundations, Part 2

  • Monday through Wednesday: Verbal behavior (mands, tacts, echoics, intraverbals, autoclitics) and motivating operations (establishing operations, abolishing operations, conditioned MOs)
  • Thursday and Friday: Stimulus control, discrimination training, and stimulus equivalence
  • Weekend: Review all Foundations material from Weeks 1 and 2. Complete 50 mixed Foundations practice questions.

Week 3: Measurement and Experimental Design

  • Monday through Wednesday: Measurement procedures (frequency, rate, duration, latency, IRT, percentage, IOA methods). Know when to use each measurement type.
  • Thursday and Friday: Experimental designs (reversal, multiple baseline, alternating treatments, changing criterion). Understand the strengths and limitations of each.
  • Weekend: Data display and visual analysis. Complete 40 practice questions covering all measurement and design topics. Review Foundations flashcards.

Week 4: Ethics

  • Monday through Wednesday: Read the entire BACB Ethics Code. Create summary notes for each section. Focus on client rights, confidentiality, informed consent, and multiple relationships.
  • Thursday and Friday: Supervision ethics, public statements, and professional conduct. Study ethical decision-making frameworks.
  • Weekend: Complete 50 ethics practice questions. Review any Ethics Code sections where you made errors. Also review Foundations and Measurement flashcards.

Week 5: Applications, Part 1

  • Monday through Wednesday: Behavior assessment: indirect methods, direct observation, functional analysis methodology. Know the differences and when to use each.
  • Thursday and Friday: Reinforcement-based interventions: differential reinforcement (DRA, DRO, DRI, DRL), noncontingent reinforcement, token economies.
  • Weekend: Take your second full-length mock exam. Analyze results by content area. Identify your two weakest areas for targeted review next week.

Week 6: Applications, Part 2 and Weak Area Review

  • Monday through Wednesday: Skill acquisition procedures: shaping, chaining, prompting, discrete trial training, naturalistic teaching. Generalization and maintenance programming.
  • Thursday and Friday: Spend these days on your two weakest content areas identified from the Week 5 mock exam. Deep dive into the specific topics where you are making errors.
  • Weekend: Complete 60 mixed practice questions from all content areas. Review flashcards across all topics.

Week 7: Integration and Mock Exams

  • Monday and Tuesday: Take a full-length mock exam under timed conditions. Score it and analyze results.
  • Wednesday through Friday: Targeted review based on mock exam results. Focus on the content areas and specific topics where you are still below 75% accuracy.
  • Weekend: Complete 80 mixed practice questions. Focus on scenario-based questions that require you to apply multiple concepts together. Review all flashcards.

Week 8: Final Review and Exam Prep

  • Monday: Take one final full-length mock exam. This is your last comprehensive assessment.
  • Tuesday and Wednesday: Light targeted review based on final mock exam results. Focus only on topics where you are still making consistent errors.
  • Thursday: Light flashcard review only. Review your summary notes. No new material.
  • Friday (if exam is Saturday): No studying. Prepare your exam day logistics: ID, directions to the testing center, comfortable clothing. Go to bed early.

Daily Study Session Structure

Each study session should follow this format for maximum efficiency:

  1. Warm-up (10 minutes): Review flashcards from the previous session
  2. New material (60 to 90 minutes): Study the scheduled content area through textbook reading, notes, or lecture review
  3. Practice questions (30 to 45 minutes): Complete topic-specific questions and review every explanation thoroughly
  4. Cool-down (10 minutes): Create flashcards for any concepts you struggled with during the session

Keys to Success on an Accelerated Timeline

On a two-month timeline, you cannot afford to skip days or have unfocused study sessions. Every hour counts. Stay disciplined, trust the process, and prioritize practice questions over passive reading. If you follow this plan consistently, you will cover all content areas with enough depth to pass the exam.
