Overview of BCBA Supervision Requirements

Supervised fieldwork is a required component of BCBA certification. The BACB requires that candidates accumulate supervised experience applying behavior-analytic skills in applied settings under the guidance of a qualified supervisor. Understanding these requirements is essential both for your candidacy and for the supervision-related questions on the BCBA exam.

Fieldwork Options

The BACB offers two fieldwork options, each with different hour requirements:

Supervised Fieldwork (2,000 hours)

This is the standard fieldwork pathway. Candidates must accumulate at least 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork. This option provides more flexibility in how hours are distributed across time and requires a minimum of 5% supervision (at least 100 hours of supervision within those 2,000 hours).

Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork (1,500 hours)

This option requires fewer total hours but has stricter requirements for supervision intensity. Candidates must accumulate at least 1,500 hours with at least 10% supervision (at least 150 hours of supervision). This option is designed for placements where the supervisee is receiving more intensive, concentrated training.

Supervision Ratios and Requirements

Regardless of the fieldwork option, several requirements govern supervision:

  • Supervision contacts must occur at least twice per month during each supervisory period
  • At least one contact per month must be individual supervision (one-on-one between supervisor and supervisee)
  • Group supervision can supplement individual supervision but cannot replace it entirely. Group size should not exceed 10 supervisees.
  • At least 50% of supervised hours must be spent in direct client contact (implementing behavior-analytic services directly with clients)

Who Can Supervise?

Qualified supervisors must hold an active BCBA or BCBA-D certification in good standing. Additionally, they must have completed an 8-hour supervision training that meets BACB requirements. Supervisors are responsible for maintaining their supervisory competence through continuing education related to supervision practices.

Supervisor Responsibilities

The supervisor holds significant responsibilities throughout the supervisory relationship:

  • Providing a supervision contract that outlines expectations, responsibilities, and the supervisory schedule
  • Observing the supervisee's performance in the natural environment
  • Providing feedback on the supervisee's clinical skills, professional behavior, and ethical conduct
  • Documenting supervision activities and maintaining accurate records
  • Ensuring that clients receive effective services while the supervisee develops competence
  • Evaluating the supervisee's progress and providing written feedback at regular intervals

Supervisee Responsibilities

Supervisees also have important responsibilities:

  • Preparing for supervision meetings by reviewing data, cases, and relevant literature
  • Actively participating in supervision activities and implementing supervisor feedback
  • Maintaining accurate documentation of fieldwork hours and supervision contacts
  • Practicing within their scope of competence and seeking guidance when unsure
  • Disclosing any conflicts of interest, ethical concerns, or personal issues that may affect professional performance

Activities That Count as Fieldwork

Fieldwork hours can include a range of behavior-analytic activities:

  • Conducting behavioral assessments (preference assessments, FBAs, skills assessments)
  • Designing and implementing behavior intervention plans
  • Collecting and graphing data
  • Training and supervising behavior technicians (RBTs)
  • Participating in treatment team meetings
  • Developing treatment goals and objectives
  • Conducting parent and caregiver training
  • Reviewing and analyzing client data for clinical decision-making

Documentation Requirements

Accurate documentation is critical for BCBA candidacy. The BACB requires that supervisees maintain ongoing records of their fieldwork hours, including:

  • Date and duration of each fieldwork experience
  • Setting and type of activity
  • Supervisor name and credentials
  • Supervision contact dates, durations, and types (individual vs. group)
  • Monthly verification of hours by the supervisor

Using the BACB's fieldwork tracking system and maintaining a personal backup of all documentation is strongly recommended.

Common Supervision Pitfalls

  • Insufficient direct observation - Supervision should include direct observation of the supervisee working with clients, not just meetings to discuss cases
  • Inadequate feedback - Supervisors should provide specific, actionable feedback, not just general praise or vague recommendations
  • Missing documentation - Hours and contacts that are not properly documented may not count toward candidacy requirements
  • Dual relationships - The supervisory relationship should remain professional, and both parties should be aware of potential conflicts of interest
